ALTBRAND'S LABOR DAY TELETHON
Why should Jerry Lewis have all the fun? Get your tuxes on, your timpanis
tuned and your hair greased back. It's Telethon Time.
Here's the plan: AltBrand is holding its version of the MDA Telethon.
Send us a comic strip written around the theme of the MDA Telethon. You can
write it as if your characters are *on* the Telethon. Or you
can write it as a request for donations. Or you can chose another angle as
long as it's related to the MDA telethon.
Keep 'em in good taste, we're going for a little publicity from MDA on this
one. If we *do* get attention from a major media market, it could mean some
new readers for your strip.
Here's what AltBrand is gonna do: We're going to run the Telethon from Aug.
27 - 31. We'll update the site several times per day, so several strips will
appear each day -- in true Telethon style. (There will be a list of previous
strips to help people find all of the participants).
We will set up a PayPal account to collect donations for the MDA. At the end
of the event, AltBrand will donate *all* of the money to the MDA. We'll not
be making any money from this.
We're selling banner ads for the site at $100 per day. If you're interested,
contact one of the AltBrand cartoonists. All of this money will be added to
the MDA donation.
DEADLINE:
Get your strip to us by Aug. 22.
We'll need Aug. 23-26 to organize the event.
Send your strips to guigar@excite.com with the following information:
Your name
Your e-mail
Your comic's URL

Color me stupid, but I have no idea what the MDA Telethon is. I'd like to get in on this, but could I get some info first so my strip is on topic?

------------------

The MDA Telethon, otherwise known as Jerry's Kids, is a yearly fund-raising event organized by Jerry Lewis and pals to raise money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
While Jerry Lewis hosts day-long programs on TV and takes pledges from viewers, we plan to be updating comics for three days and take PayPal donations. All the money will go to the MDA.
If you haven't seen a Jerry's Kids, think along the lines of Comic Relief (for you Brits) or your local PBS telethon.
------------------

I think if it's one continuous idea, it would be best to submit one twelve-panel strip.

Hey, I just had an idea. After we scan in our comics, we really won't need the originals anymore. What if, in addition to taking donations, you put up the original artwork for auction? You could make a bit more money that way. Or you could have a raffle. Say for every dollar you donate, you get a chance to win the original of a comic drawn for the marathon.
Anyway, it was just a suggestion. It would probably be too late to try and set that all up anyway.
------------------

That is an absolutely fantastic idea, guys, and I think we should definitely do it...
... next year.
There's just not enough time with seven days to showtime to work out the logistics of getting the right sketches to the right people and keeping track of who won which auction for a certain piece of original art.
But next year, I think it would be a great idea. We should work it into the event from the giddyup.
I'm really thrilled that you guys are so excited about this. I can't wait for the event to begin!
--Brad
------------------
