I'm a noobie here -- I made a graphic novel mainly for my own benefit and a few of my family members, but finally decided to take it public, risking the shame of criticism by people who wouldn't just praise it because they happen to know me. When I reviewed the various webcomic hosts, Comic Genesis seemed like a pretty good place because some of the comics I like are here, and according to what I read, you have more control over the appearance of your pages here than on some of the other hosts.

So I signed up. The pages to do that seemed amateurish and confusing, but I got an account, submitted a test page, and got my password a few days later. I've been uploading my pages with few problems -- once I figured out the system -- but haven't been able to get onto CGWiki to create a wiki page for the comic. I usually search the wiki guide for comics here, and figure that it is the best way for new readers to find mine as well -- if I can create a page for it, that is.

But CGWiki doesn't recognize my username, with or without a capital letter at the beginning. And when I try to create a wiki account, I get

Catchable fatal error: Method User::__toString() must return a string value in /home/mediawiki/includes/Block.php on line 1069

so something in the site PHP script is broken. I use Firefox, but IE doesn't work either.

So... what does everyone else do?

Thanks for posting your observations, gjbivin. Most of us here have been around for a while, so it's helpful to get the perspective of a newcomer.

As for the wiki, you aren't the only one who's had a complaint lately about it not working right. At this point, it's probably up to Kisai to look into it and see if it's something she can fix.

Give up and forget about it like me and everyone else who've tried to use the technical aspects of CG for about three or four years now. If you've been able to get your own page up and running you've gotten further than I ever have. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on what side of the screen you're on), nearly all the mods have lives offline and bigger fish to fry than trying to help n00bs get all set up with everything CG used to offer.

Wow. I knew things were somewhat...behind in site maintenence around here but I had no idea. As long as I could update my comic when I wanted to I paid little attention to everything else. For the twelve years I've been here the recent years have been bliss compared to the constant glitches and crashes of the early days. At one point the server screwed up so bad half the sites were lost permanently. I just lucked out. I saw the site gain in popularity and quality, change from "Keenspace" to "Comicgenesis" (which I didn't take to very well) new features, new design, everything seemed to be going good. And the old forum on Yahoo! Oh. My. God. That was the most fun I've ever had online, no kidding. It was unmoderated and we fought like cats and dogs. We were mean, but also helpful. (anyone remember J.Grant?) If you were a noob and needed to know how to do something chances were you could get your answers there. If not the "Wranglers" (very experienced users endorsed by the site)were around and were usually all the further you needed to go.
I hope this is not the "death spiral" of a site that has been a huge part of my life. There's no need. The people are here, the enthusiasm seems to be here, surely advertising still has potential.
At one point I took over a site called "The Keenspace Top 100" from the guy who started it who no longer had the time. I'd volunteer to do that here if I knew more about running a site this big. The top 100 was easy.
Ah well, I hope it gets worked out. This site REALLY means a lot to me.

I don't hang around the forums very often, so I didn't know about any of this. I knew that the online ftp was screwed up a few months ago, but it's fixed now.

For all the six and a half years I've been on here, I've been intensely grateful because CG is free and all the inner workings of a webcomic were already done for me, because I had no money and couldn't program anything significant to save my life. Should I see about setting up a mirror site elsewhere before a disaster happens here? (I actually do have a mirror site on LiveJournal of all things, which I set up years ago when CG would break down frequently, but it's very bare bones and ugly-looking). Where would be a good place to do this, for free and with a minimum of fuss?

I'm about to start a new regular job and, theoretically, should finally have a bit of money soon. If that pans out (the job and the money) and lasts for a while, I suppose I could finally purchase a domain (frig, is that even the right terminology? You know, buy a site.) and pay someone to set it up for me. I'll have to wait and see if that becomes practical.

Please let me know if ComicGenesis itself is in jeopardy. Thanks.

I don't think it's about to keel over, but it seems like it's well, kinda been on life support the past few years. There's still a lot of hosted comics running here, but a large amount of hte people who used to be around are gone. That's people from all levels- comic writers, comic readers, and the people who have authority and access to the workings of the site. I'm not really exaggerating when I say the community has been pretty much decimated.

Even if my comic isn't updating here anymore, I still come back here to talk with everyone on the forums and read other people's comics. Unfortunately there are things I don't like about the hosting here (and not all of them are things that can be "fixed," I think most of htem are probably just personal preferences I've discovered over the course of time). For me, it's not a valuable use of my time to update the coding of my other site and then come over here and do it all over again (partly from scratch because there's some incompatibilities between the two) when this site gets the number of pageviews/visitors a month that my other site might get in a day or two. Admittedly this is partly because I am a vain asswipe.

I, too, am very grateful for the start I got here. God bless this poor abused site and how it had to put up with the abominations I had uploaded early on in my days here It's been great for me as an exploration of my artistic abilities as well as my shallow foray into the land of web design, but it no longer is able to provide everything I want out of a comic host service.

I might feel differently if the community were still as active as it used to be (even just "active" as it was when I first lurked around here in late '08), but it honestly feels like a ghost town most of the time, and the fact that there are usually more active spambots than actual posters is disheartening. I'm not sure whether the spam drives away noobs, or the lack of noobs makes everything ripe for spammers, but I suppose it's become a self-perpetuating cycle by now.
