I hate applying to college. Why? Becuase they're all so stupid and I don't stand a hope in hell of getting in to the ones I want. And why's that? 'Cos I don't paint the same dull, pretentious, conformist shit that all the students at the local 6th form do. I hope one of their vacuous, geometric paintings falls on them from a great height and crushes their naive little schoolboy bodies! For naive is what they are if they think that pretention is a good substitute for actual depth or symbolism.<P>And of course no one at the age of 19 is allowed to know what they want to do with their life... especially if they've just spent the last 6 years doing it...

Right on, say it sister!<P>I remember those days. Only substitute "write" for "paint" and you'll have my dilemma. But I did find a school that let me in. A pretty nice one, surprisingly. I am one of the few kids in my class that actually likes the college I got into.<P>If you want to feel some pain, check out a book on "How To Write Your College Application Essay Like a HalfWit" and start laughing.

Just gonna rant for a second. I don't know how the whole application process is different in England, so don't let this spook you.<P>I am the world's worst student, and I couldn't care less about extracurriculars. I had to rely entirely on charisma, potential and writing skill to get me into college. Which means I spent a lot of time sitting in interviews. Here, one administrator sits you in a chair and asks you questions for an hour.<P>What I always hated about admissions was the way colleges would only admit the kids who would maintain the school's reputation or fix anything they were embarrassed of. It was so transparent in the interviews. At one of the schools that rejected me, the interview was going just fine until the interviewer asked me "What social issues do you follow?" I don't "follow" any social issues. I do care about stuff, but not to the point where I'd go to protests and spend my weekends volunteering. I live in a sparsely populated area that doesn't have any sense of community to begin with. However, since this was a rich-kid college that wanted to be a very leftist and socially active school, somehow I'm not good enough. From that point on, the interviewer didn't make eye contact or write anything down. <P>Even the school I got into pulled this kind of crap. They've got a great creative writing department. They KNOW they've got a great creative writing department. They want to show it off. I have sub-average grades and lousy test scores, but I got in because they liked my essay.<P>Now I know the college is going to teach to its strong points, but this only results in a student body where everyone acts and thinks the same. I visited the college I'm going to. I met the other students.<P>It was like 2500 of <I>me</I>. It was freaky.<P>Done ranting. phew.

If anyone is wondering I applied to the following: Goldsmiths, Norwich School of Art and St. Martins. All of them Fine Art BA courses. T_T<P>It's so annoying applying through B route (there are two ways to apply: A route for the educated and B route for the stupid scum like me) because they only let you pick three choices. And the choices are put into order of preference, so the Universities put in second or third choice are peeved before the interview even begins!<P>And then they hate me 'cos I draw comics. All my portfolio consists of is manga ^_^ and a couple of crappy observational drawings. So they ignore any fine art content just because it's an illustrative style T_T<P>And I had twice as much work as the other people who were being interviewed that day! Bah...<P>These people! They never take my lack of formal education into account ^_~ (I'm sure that must count for something at art college lol).<P>Heh, you must excuse. I'm annoyed at the prospect of having to waste a year doing a Foundation study >_< I hate being told what to do by Art teachers! As if I can't be responsible for making any choice about my artwork (I hate being told my style isn't appropriate. I always find it pleanty appropriate thank-you-very-much).<P>This is a long rant yah? ^_^

I had a friend who went to Goldsmiths. He did English and Theatre Studies, got a 2.1. Don't go near the Computer Science building - apparently you'll get stoned. As in with rocks o_0

I really have to wonder about art schools. I mean, I may be speaking out of ignorance, (wait, yes, yes I am), but if you don't like drawing and painting what other people tell you to draw or paint, why go to a school that specializes in telling people what to draw or paint?<P>Of course, the other side would argue that the school gives you the tools to draw or paint anything you want, by forcing you to dabble in it. No college or University has ever existed where you didn't have to take classes you didn't want to take. You may have never used charcoal nor ever will again, but the exposure is what counts, perhaps?<P>That's kind of how it is in engineering anyway. I may never design a 2nd order passive band-pass filter again, but I had to do it a few times, just to get the experience under my belt or something.<P>Anyway, good luck with the search and I hope you get matched with an appropriate school or your liking.<P>JB<P>------------------
