So anyone seen some good movie recently?

That doesn't count, Zwigof only ever makes comic-related films because he comes from comic background.

Saw "Despicable me" last night. Quite good, had a few maniacal laugh moment and, of course, a few giggling moment. Joani looked at me weird when those happens but hey, the movie is enjoyable. Especially the punching a shark in the face part.

Well pretty much anything that is popular regardless of the press is the sights, for film adaptation I'd say. White-Out got a film and its was from Oni press (Like Scott Pilgrim). And Pilgrim is a pretty popular comic. Its regularly on the NY TImes best sellers list, and has won a few awards.

Personally I'm still waiting for hollywood to realize that they need to have someone do a Stray Bullets film.

I didn't know that Scott Pilgrim was that popular. I just figured that it had a really good agent.
I know that Skeleton Key was made into a movie. But I didn't think they'd make a trend of basing movies on something... intelligent.

Its probably closer to being mainstream than the Kick Ass comics, and they got an even bigger box office release *shrug*

Secret of Kells. It's a stylized animated film that's cute and entertaining and has a great soundtrack.

Finally saw "Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus". Cute, clever, didn't leave me as fully engrossed as I thought it would. But, overall I'd say it was fun.

Watched the straight to TV version of "The Color of Magic". Interesting, definitely interesting. I went ahead and bought the book because of the movie, so I'll soon be engrossing myself in Terry Pratchet.

The first few books, while good, are not nearly as good as later works.

Hollywood is snapping up any comic property with potential draw these days. Comics really are a go-to stable for exploitable intellectual property, as we all know. There have been plenty of comic-to-movie adaptations made from comics that weren't exactly on the radar beforehand. Kick Ass is a good example, as are Road to Perdition and Wanted. Lots of movies have been made from comics that certainly had an audience, but were far from being franchise titles. Look at Hellboy, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Constantine, From Hell, and even V for Vendetta, to name a few. Some people are even making comics now with the specific intent to try to option to Hollywood. It's crazy.

Sure, most of the movies are picked up for their action or comedy potential, but not all of them. All in all, I've been fairly impressed by Hollywood's willingness to place a bet on the comic properties they have. It hasn't all been big-budget superhero and explosions stuff, and I think that's had a bit of a hand in lending credibility to the storytelling capabilities of the "graphic novel" in the minds of the general public. After all, right in front of the merchandising that inevitably coincides with these movies are shiny new TPBs that get distributed to every Big Books store in every mall from here to eternity. Legitimacy breeds legitimacy. It may mean even more oddball comic movies down the road. As it stands, it seems they're making a couple a year.

I was lucky enough to see this back in October and it was marvelous. Is it true that the kid in the film is supposed to look like the animator David O'Reily?

Finally got to see the Runaways it didn't come to a theatre near me. It was very cool, sex drugs and rock n roll. Kristen Stewart was dead on as Joan Jett, had her mannerisms and quirks down and looked just like her. Dakota Fanning was awesome as Cherie Currie, though when she did Cherry Bomb it was so wrong, in the she's only 15 and should not be so sexy cause Dakota is a sweet little girl kind a way. plus the music was kick ass.

also saw Girl With the Dragoon Tattoo very cool, not bad for a foreign film.

Just saw a Single Man, which is exactly the kinda boring existential bullshit I love. Colin Firth and Julianne Moore are great in it, beautifully photographed.

Yeah, the point of the band in the first place. Creepy, yes, still a bitchin song. Can't wait to see this.

I wanted to see that, Colin's acting ability is overshadowed by his hunkiness, plus he's the only straight english actor.

the horrible thing is hollywood is remaking it

I think it was the whole point of the 70s. it is a very cool rock bio pic.

Someone should've told casting.

Yeah, complete nonsense. At least they're getting the delightful Carey Mulligan to star in it. Not who I first thought of but I'll let her do whatever she wants.

What I'm really dreading is the remake to Let the Right One In. Pointless.

Hollywood should remake Le Dernier Combat. All those damn subtitles.

I'm led to believe that studios are regularly buying novel rights in bulks, or having contracts with publishing houses to have everything they publish slide right into their property. Not with intention to film all those novels, but if you consider that at least some of them will be sufficiently popular, it's viable in long run, and it works with the whole "assembly line" system that is cherished in Hollywood. Then it's all a matter of which director they get to do it and how appropriate choice he is. Like, Road to Perdition got Sam Mendez, I think, who at least is competent. So perhaps comics are now in that deal too.
