Re: So anyone heard a good album lately?
As a side note, I've been dabbling with mixing myself. Been using MuseScore to map out the notes, export it as a midi, and then import it into a program and apply instrumental sounds to it.
Which is not to say that I'm good at it.
I know very little about music. But I did need electronic victory music for my game...the techno battle music fading into a horn fanfare just did not work.
Which is not to say that I'm good at it.

Re: So anyone heard a good album lately?
if you could PM me what your looking for. I can actually do full on "neo" classical stuff, or more progressive stuff. I been playing in a few electro bands the last year or so, I've been learning more than I had back in the day. depends on what you are going for, if I can do it quickly or if its gonna take some time. but I'd love to help out a friend in need.MixedMyth wrote:Oooo. any help you could give would be much appreciated!

MCD... true that. But I don't own most the instruments I'd like to use in most tracks. And though I have access to a studio at work, its a lot more work. Especially for small one off things like this.

How do you go about learning a new instrument? You get books, or you learn on your own, or you just rely on good old internet?Phact0rri wrote: MCD... true that. Re: So anyone heard a good album lately?
depends on the instrument. I have a good enough background. that most instruments aren't like reiventing the wheel. course then there's instruments I'd never kid myself learning. like the SitarMcDuffies wrote:How do you go about learning a new instrument? Re: So anyone heard a good album lately?
Why sitar? Doesn't seem like such great stretch from other string instruments... unless you plan to learn indian scale to go with it.
I'm planing to expant on some other string instrument, but the problem is, any other string instrument except for guitar is impossible to obtain in local shops. And I really don't feel like ordering ukulele or something from amazon and then getting ripped off by customs which is known to double the price of what you bought. Also I missed in oportunity to get my hands on a nice tamboura last year. Anyways my impression is that moving from one string instrument to another is just a matter of learning a different tuning which is again not something I'm unfamiliar with.
If I had any keyboard in my fingers, tho, I'd probably try to move on to xylophone or marimba.

Sitars look hard, and talking to people who play the Sitar it usually takes the better part of a a decade to master the fundamentals of the instrument.
As to string instruments, I thought Violins were pretty widely accessible. I wish I could afford more instruments.

I'm not sure how knowledge of plucked instruments translates to bowed. Violin has similar tuning to guitar (actually, reverse, sort of as if I tuned a guitar for left hand) but I hear from various sides, alternately, that it's awfully difficult to learn and that it's not too difficult at all. Learning violins are reasonably cheap (in range of 80-100e) but I suppose one would eventually want to upgrade to the real one. I'm not terribly attracted to violin anyways.
True. I also with I had extra time to dedicate to them.I wish I could afford more instruments.

well fingering = translates well. the fretless is a bit to be used to, but you adapt easily enough.. I do find when I've picked up a bow for it to be a bit smoother and easier but the change ups on the strings can sometimes be tricky. I don't consider myself good at bowed instruments, as I've only "played around" with cello and violin never really focused on learning... but I could see that playing guitar or bass, or something similar would help with the learning curve.McDuffies wrote:I'm not sure how knowledge of plucked instruments translates to bowed. Fretless, I've heard, is usually covered by putting correction fluid dots on the neck or inserting a chart under the strings. Still must be awful strain for the left hand.Phact0rri wrote: well fingering = translates well. the fretless is a bit to be used to, but you adapt easily enough.. I don't easily admit because it's far-fetched, but my long time desire is to study trumpet. For some reason it always seemed like an instrument that would suit my temper, but they're fairly expensive and learning is likely very slow so I'm never getting around to it.
Guitarist of my band wishes to learn sax. Sadly they're among the more expensive instruments that you can get around, but he's listened to Zu with Mike Patton live and now he wants to put a distorsion on it and do something free-jazz style.
There might have been if I didn't want to make comics too. I'm always saddened that I haven't learned another instrument earlier, but I've only recently gotten to the state of mind where repeating one phrase over and over doesn't bore me but instead relaxes me.There is this too. there's never enough time it feels.

I played trumpet for a little bit, when I was living in Tennessee. And I found it easy to adapt to. the pressing on the valves were relatively easy for me, and I stumbled through quite a few jazz standard chords. I had to sell the one I had, and I'd love to get another one again sometime. its a really nice piece of brass. And its highly recommended.

Valves don't scare me, it's production of the tone that seems difficult.

the air flow? really the only part about brass I hate is after a while I can't feel my lips anymore.

Making lips vibrate to produce the tone doesn't seem like an easy feat to me.
Anyways check this out. Awfully funny. Specially if you play, 'cause you know it's true.

as to blowing on a brass. all you need to do is pucker/purse your lips and blow.

The Henry Clay People "Somewhere On The Golden Coast"
The album isn't officially out yet, but you can listen to it for free right here. There's even a free download of one of the songs on there as well.
