Actually, the Brits are pretty free to do what they like. Just look at their what they allow their tabloids to report on the royalty, for example.I'd like to learn more about freedom from an imperial British subject, that is if her majesty allows you to.Just my free opinion, of course.
edit: Cripes you guys post fast. But seriously, don't believe everything you see on TV people. Especially if it's the portrayal of another country by a film/series made in Hollywood.

What he said. I'd also add hating on people for things like retardation because, really, how okay is it to do that to someone who can't really defend themselves and for no reason other than they were born with a different mental capacity? It's just low. I'd much rather go after people who should know better but do stuff anyway.Jim North wrote: And it's most likely time it got back to that. Hating on people for their race or sexual orientation is wrong because they were born into those things. Hating on people for liking a book series is okay because they chose that course of their own free will!
So good day, ladies and gentlemen, and have fun with that.
Also, you can't fool me, Komi! I know what you're cyber-queen has planned and I'm here to tell you that she can keep her phonton fingers off of the world's ceylonium reserves!

Re: What's with the Vampire obsession nowadays?
wow! the Anglish resorting to sarcasm, I never saw that coming. It's unprecedented! I was think about how the queens goon in Canada used royal authority to shut down the government in order keep the unpopular Pm Harper from being booted from office. Now his iron fisted reign of terror goes unchallenged. I love Earl Grey tea, but only that which is taxed with representation.
Let this Anglo-American dispute be settled in July in South Africa. The three lions are going to get their butts whooped by us yanks. You stand no chance against the might of our great soccer team!
I think as a society we've made a lot of progress towards Gay rights. It's been slow but hopefully soon Gay marriage will be legal every where. no one should be denied the right to a miserably unhappy married life. changes happens slowly in a democracy but it does happen. No one loves lesbians more than I, except maybe Fat Mike.

you clearly have no idea what happened in Parliament. The Governor-General was in her right to suspend Parliament, just as she would've been in her right to allow the opposition parties to form a coalition government. Both moves were unprecedented in Canadian history, and she made what she believed was the best choice for Canada, as is her job. No matter whether we liked the decision or not.

That being said, it's fairly ridiculous to view Europe as a champion of civil rights. Or anywhere, for that matter. Every country in the world has rather significant and similar problems in the area, yet it's always the United States that gets pigeonholed by international media as some sort of largely imagined civil rights hellhole where everyone is always being put down by the man.
Also, once I went to the UK and the Queen had me imprisoned and severely beaten for looking at her funny

Re: What's with the Vampire obsession nowadays?
Michaelle Jean is the appointed representative of the Queen, She represents the Crowns best interest first. What's the point of having elected officials and a house of parliament if another counties proxy has such authority? Democracy fails when one person is allowed such power. Especially when such power comes from abroad. I know the situation was complicated but let the people you elect do the job you elected them for, if that means a change of power then so be it. But I'm not Canadian so however you guys want to run your country is your affair. Though I am in favor of Quebec's liberation! Viva La Quebec!

The reason why America gets beaten up over that is because there's a lot of really loud shouting about how awesome you are, when really you're just as crap as the rest of us. We Brits know our country is shit, we have accepted it and settle down to mumble about taxes while we get rained on.Kirb wrote:That being said, it's fairly ridiculous to view Europe as a champion of civil rights. Re: What's with the Vampire obsession nowadays?
It's pretty much the same reason as to why a lot of Americans don't like Texas. But that said, I don't want all the loudmouths in the media you guys see to be thought of as representative of all of us. The reasonable people just aren't as vocal. I hope, at least, that I am not like that and I believe I am as representative of my country as anyone. I guess what I'm saying is...we need to take the bad with the good, but also the good with the bad.Komiyan wrote: The reason why America gets beaten up over that is because there's a lot of really loud shouting about how awesome you are, when really you're just as crap as the rest of us. What I always get confused about is the word Yank. Okay, so it's from Yankee. But while most of the world uses it to mean any American, here in the states it's what the South calls us northerners. I just find it to be a fascinating little piece of etymology.
The funny thing about that is that Mexico and South America totally have bigger canyons. it's just the biggest canyon that WE have. Which isn't to say that it isn't beautiful and spectacular.Tellurider wrote:You're all just jealous 'cause WE have the Grand Canyon!

Re: What's with the Vampire obsession nowadays?
Oh yeah, it's all media. 99% of the actual Americans I've met have been awesome and reasonable people, only one of them was a Republican who thought that American healthcare was in a fine state and that gay marriage shouldn't be allowed. Every country has unreasonable shits, though.
