With the examples, I've gotten pretty good at skimming until I find names I recognize. Particularly easy when the page is organized by type, that way I can skip for example the Anime/Manga section since I'm unfamiliar with most of it and look more at areas where I might see a reference I'd get.

Edit: Cuddly said pretty much exactly what I was gonna say.

Said what I was gonna say, too! Damn you, Cuddly! Stop taking all the good points!

But I was usually reading them to actually find stuff that I haven't heard of, so I could check them out. Found a few interesting bands that way.

Well, like I said, I've found a number of things new to me myself from going through the examples . . . you just gotta learn to tune out the bad stuff while you're skimming and just get in on the good.

I try to stay away from TV Tropes as much as possible.

This. Don't get me wrong, I like TVT, but I have to occasionally enlist the help of the Firefox extension Pageaddict just so it stops me from spending all night on that site.

I've found that the best way to keep from getting endlessly sucked into the site is to go ahead and give in to it. Eventually you'll have read everything and won't need to keep on link-clicking!

Also a good idea, but only when there's absolutely nothing to do. Then, it get's annoying to the point where you need to keep yourself from ever looking at even the home page. ;)

Well, that, and you'll be dead in four or five days.

Before making the attempt, make sure to have a fully stocked mini-fridge sitting next to your chair. You may also want to consider a catheter of some kind, or at least a few bedpans.

That is, until you reach a zen-like sort of state of meditation, where you no longer require mortal sustenance such as food, water, or even clean air, and you instead feast spiritually on the knowledge brought by each new page, absorbing the rich, nutritious concepts therein.

i printed out a list of most of the indexes and am slowly working my way through it systematically, generally in alphabetical order. i am currently on "C"

Going back to McD's complaint about there being a lot of "I know this doesn't fit the trope but…" examples, I think in a way those are actually a bit helpful. To understand a trope, you not only have to know what it is, but also what it isn't. Having examples of things that are almost, but not quite, the trope can help flesh out the true meaning of the trope. ¢¢

That "bottle" that is the exact same size as big slurpee suddenly doesn't seem so useless.

Is there a trope for that thing when in sitcoms, two parts of the same room act as if they're separate rooms? Like, if you don't want anyone to hear your conversation, you just move a little to the left and they won't hear you no matter how loud you speak?

The First Law of Sitcom Acoustics. In live theater, it's generally known simply as Stage Whisper.

I'm certain that there is one, but my ten minute search was all in vain. On a related topic, the words "talk" and "hear" look really strange to me now, and probably will for the rest of the evening.

Cool.
They should stop acting like they're still shooting in front of live audience, we know they aren't.

That's starting to be the trend more and more, actually. Like Scrubs! No live audience (or even laugh track!) required.
