Hi, everybody!
As I mentioned in today's "Chatterbox," I'm starting up a contest, for this coming week!
For those of you who have been following ShadowFall and reading "Kai's Chatterbox" along with it, you know I just got the speech recognition on my Mac to work. But now I need a good name for the computer. I've been calling it "Buster," but I don't particularly like that. Anyway, the speech rec icon I've chosen is a cute robot, and I have him speaking in a "Trinoids" robotic-alienesque voice.
The contest is "Name Kaichi's Computer," and the rules are simple: names must be either two or three syllables long, easy for a native English speaker to pronounce, and not x-rated. You may enter more than one name, if you like, but all names must be posted in this thread, not emailed to me or given in an Instant Message.
The contest will run from Friday, 25 May to Friday, 1 June, at which time I will try all the entries on "Buster" and see which one he has the least trouble recognizing or responds to the fastest. The winning name will then be ceremoniously applied to my newly-speaking Mac, and there will be much rejoicing...
Okay, so maybe there will just be a little gleeful giggling on my part. Cyber cake and ice cream will be served, and possibly those new chocolate cream filled Oreo cookies...if they last that long.
There may be a prize for the person who submits the winning name, but I haven't decided what it is yet. Maybe an 8 x 10 inch drawing of the winner's favorite Kyoki Press character would be a decent prize. I don't know. I'll take suggestions on that, too.
Let the naming begin!
(^-^)
Kaichi

That is a scary looking little bugger...
GRATUITIOUS SILLINESS: Makxuk
His eyes are the biggest feature, so how about something related to that? Iris, Blinky, or if you're a Star Wars fan, Padawan (for 'pupil).
I'm not very good at names, that's why I usually use mythological names or descriptive ones when I need them. So how about "Stupid infernal program, why don't you obey my orders you infernal piece of slime from the darkest pits of HADES!!!" In my experience, most apps are called that eventually

------------------

The only programs that ever give me trouble are Netscape, Explorer and the atrocious AOL program. As a matter of fact, I never had a system crash in the year before I installed AOL. Since then, I have been able to trace most crashes to AOL or one of the browsers, and almost every other one to a corrupted font or an extension conflict for some freebie software I downloaded at download.com.
I LOVE MY MAC!!!!
Btw, great names so far, everybody!! Looks like I'll be spending a long while trying out names on "Buster," and the contest is only one day old.
(~-^)
Kaichi

"MacBot" seems appropriate, or, possibly "MacBeth" heheh, after all, "Macintosh" is originally a scotch name... Maybe "MacBrane"?
(of course, given that it seems to have a nasty view of communicating with outsiders, perhaps "Campbell" is more appropriate.)

After reading your "Chatter Box" for today, I would like to suggest "Marlowe" for the robot. You could also use "Faustus," "Tamburlaine" or perhaps even "Dido." Tho, the robot looks a bit silly for such dignified names, I suppose. Perhaps it should be aviation related. "Roscoe," "Lindy" or perhaps even "Tail Spin."
Jim

Ok!! Finally got all the names tried out, and came up with eight that worked equally well. So, I'd like to hold a vote, here, to help me decide on a winner!
The names in the running are:

Jojo

Blinky

Padawan

Snookums

Yoshi

Lucy

Popcorn

Cambell

The Mac had some trouble recognizing certain combinations of consonants (like the mpb in Campbell), so I tried different spellings in each of those cases.
Anyway, I'll let the voting go for a week, so everyone who wants to vote on a finalist name can do so. The cut-off for votes will be Friday, 15 June. Please only vote for one of the names listed, above, and vote only once.
This has been a lot of fun for me, so far, and I can't wait to see which name wins!!
(^-^)
Kaichi

[This message has been edited by Kaichi (edited 06-08-2001).]
