Favicons - do they make a difference?

Post by Helloearthling »

Does a comic having a favicon actually matter to you?
I'm just wondering if it's worth the effort of making one. I don't see how much effect they have.

I can assure you a favicon is nothing more than a tassle on the shiny red bike that is a webcomic, and you should probably focus on other things if you find yourself sinking hours into it.

I like favicons; they're fun.
it's interesting to have a bunch of tabs open and know what they are just by the favicons alone (bookmarks menus too).

Are favicons those tiny images that appear next to your site's name when someone bookmarks it?
Last time I tried to make one, it took me about five minutes, there's a bunch of sites that make one for you, you only have to supply the image.
I dunno how much they do for promotion of one's site, fut it's fun to see your little icon up there with others.
As a user I find them moderately helpful for spotting your link out of the bunch.

Yea, that's exactly what favicons are. I created one for my site, I find it quite helpful, actually. While it won't actually get your comic out there any faster, once someone does read it and decide to bookmark the comic, it's comes in handy. Scrolling through "bookmarks" folders, or just through the browser tabs. It makes it easy to identify your comic. But like Killbert mentioned, if you find yourself spending hours upon hours on making one... you're probably almost done. But if you FORESEE hours ahead of you working on one, you should probably not worry about it.

I mostly made mine for a touch of personalisation. More practically, yeah, I do find them useful for identifying links in my bookmarks folder as well.

Less culture you! You're in my part of the world now!

Go with a Fav if you want to differentiate it from the hundreds of other favorited sites that the reader/web person has in their drop down.

For instance Robby has a favicon of a dwarfs manhood on his site...trust me everyone knows where they're going when they see that lil guy.

I find Favicons make it easier to identify a site in a long list of dropdowns from my bookmarks. I have a lot of CG comics bookmarked and the nice little CG logo favicon makes it faster to find them amidst all the others.

I guess I just don't have this bookmark issue since I have like... 5 bookmarks. One is to an old forum I go to that doesn't even run anymore. And the other 4 I don't use at all

Erm... How is it possible to spend that long making a favicon? Even half and hour would be pushing it...

Haha, I don't know... If you decide to manually draw in each of the 3249 pixels? That could take a while... I just shrunk a random image down and used that...

Drawing manually didn't take me an hour either. Maybe if you were extremely perfectionist and weren't satisfied with anything and kept redrawing pixels over and over again.

I'm going to take all of five minutes to make a favicon when I get home.

First favicon maker that came up on google.

Can someone explain to me why it has a maximum upload size of 150 kb?

Making a favicon might take a while if it's animated.... at least I think you can get animated favicons. :-?
