I don't get it - if you're just going to put the milk bag in a jug or container anyway, why not just sell the milk directly in a plastic container?!

Milk bags produce less waste than milk jugs. They're also cheaper to produce and likely easier to store and transport in larger quantities than jugs.

The point I failed to get across is that you put the bag itself in a plastic pitcher, cut a small hole in the corner of the bag, and pour from that.
Lego seemed almost offended by the concept... I do understand that an open bag of milk in the fridge does seem a little off... but if you drink enough milk that it's only there for a day or two, it is a lot easier than keeping a handful of cartons in the fridge.

It is almost offensive!

Not to mention that people in the US are typically used having a sealable carton/container of milk that will last them until whenever the expiration date is without worry. I don't think a bag of milk is much bigger than a carton, either... just squishier.

Strangely, I don't think British Columbia has milk in a bag, everything was in cartons. Calgary too.

I don't know if this is true. Our milk jugs are reusable, and are often found being used for a variety of purposes other than storing milk. They're also recyclable (so are bags, but that goes against the 'less waste' thing).

I think they probably cost the same to produce as a bag, although bags are probably produced quicker.

As for transport - they are produced where they are filled, making transporting them a null issue - you don't transport empty jugs (except as recycled goods, and then they're crushed flat). A bag of milk that's filled is probably similarly difficult to transport as a jug of milk. And, milk jugs have convienent handles!

by average milk bags are 10% lighter, contain 60% less water, and they can fit a lot more on a truck that reduces emissions. On top of that eco-pac has designed a milk bag, that is 60-75% less packing materials than a regular milk jug. Cosco and walmart have also redesigned the milk jug so its more like a milk bag in the last few years, due in part to the manufacturing costs of plastic, which has skyrocketed the last few years.. for those out of the loop.

Soy milk really needs to step up the curve on eco packaging as well.

Costco hasn't changed anything here, nor Walmart (but who buys milk at walmart...) :|

In any case, while the bag may be slightly more eco-friendly than plastic jugs (arguable), that's not the reason it will never catch on. Besides bags being harder to recycle and the bagged milk absorbing all the smells in the fridge, it's simply because people don't like it. Green ketchup, crystal pepsi, etc. There's a reason the milk bag didn't catch on in most places in the world in the 70s.

Canada and the US aren't exactly on the recycling bandwagon overall, hence producing a product that uses less plastic that will most likely be thrown away will produce less waste.
I think they probably cost the same to produce as a bag, although bags are probably produced quicker.

Which I suppose would mean that they are somewhat more desireable if not cheaper, as "time is money."

Ah, but you can't stack as many jugs as you can bags, since bags are technically amorphous and only require some means of preventing them from bursting. Much easier for transportation, since you can transport more in the same amount of space, if that is the limiting factor.

Milk bags aren't new you know. They've been there since way before my birth, so we are all kind of used to it here. After that it's wash, empty and hop into the recycling bag.

And I sometime buy milk in Wal-mart... ok.. small 500 ml thing to drink on the road.

Because it'd say something like, "KaRAYzee Catsup!!" on the bottle. Also, I meant to say, "whackilly-colored mustard." My bad.
