Setting Up The Site

Post by IKittens »

Okay, I read most to all the Wiki guide and I didn't get it... I am so completely and utterly lost at what to do. The only thing I understand is how to set the rating and submit the comic information... Not to sound like a complete idiot or anything.... But could someone help me set this up? Like, explain it to me me like I was a 5 year old?

Sure, I can do that.

Just let me know which step you are stuck at and what you are trying to do and we'll get you started.

It sounds like you have gotten into the siteadmin and are exploring the options there.

To put more comics on your site, first save them as images with the date in year-month-day format, like for today, June 20, '08, you'd name it 20080620.jpg

Then you can click on Update/Upload comic to "your comic name"

Click Browse, find your file, then click Send File. (it will go to workspace/comics)(ignore that if you don't get it yet)

Once you've uploaded all the comics for all the days you want, click Regular Update.

Those comics (if they have dates on or before the current one) should be on your site in the next few hours.

To do anything more with your site, you'll need an FTP program. I use SmartFTP. Ask again if you need help with that.

yes, I know exactly how you feel! I felt so utterly lost just yesterday ^^... well, even though there are a lot of helpful explanations, I'll try and explain the process as I understand it. It's going to be a bit general, but here we go:

There are two sites you should be familiar with, if you're like me. there is the siteadmin site and the Comic Genesis FTP site.

The FTP site controls your webpages. You can log into it using your siteadmin account. Anything you want to upload ends up on the FTP site. You upload comics into the workspace/comics folder and any other images into the workspace/images folder. If you want to edit the layout of your webpage, you edit the HTML of the dailytemplate and the indextemplate, which are also in the workspace folder.

The siteadmin site contains the update buttons--you need to go to the site to update everything you've added to the FTP site. You can request a Regular Update (to update the templates and comics), a Full Update (which updates EVERYTHING), and an Index Update (which updates the templates).

So here's your basic description. Once you get this you'll be able to learn the rest easily :) hope this helps!
