The Devil

Postby Bing on Mon Jan 29, 2001 1:25 am

Well, my original intention was not to have the Devil or God appearing in the strip at all, since... well, it's complicated. In fact I spent a considerable amount of time trying to think up of different names I could call "the Devil" and not actually explicitly use any of the obvious names (such as Satan, Bielzibub, Lucifer... etc). I gave up. Instead I'm just not going to have any characters in the comic mention him by name.
Of course, his appearance makes things more complicated, since the obviously "evil" person in the comic before he came along is Archangel, who is the substitute of God.

quote:
My bet was sometime in February. All well. Good job, Bing!

Were you running a betting pool or something? I have to remind you that gambling is an immoral activity.
Unless you win. Then all you have to make sure is that you don't get robbed.

(The Shadows are hiding something.)
So... you've finally included the devil in your strip (or a demon). Damn. My bet was sometime in February. All well. Good job, Bing!
Dark Knight http://dk.keenspace.com/

I'm not sure that specifying whether it is "the" Satan or "the" God or not is very relevant... Still it also happens to be a convinient vehicle to carry stories forward, since implicitly the "right path" is set out, and there is a clear "wrong path" which should not be taken.
Of course, I prefer to make things a little complicated, and then lie sleepless at night wondering how the Hell I was going to get myself out of [i[that[/i] mess (again. The only thing is, I would really hate to offend anyone by becoming too involved in religion. Could start a war, ya know. Then agian, if I had a spine and wasn't an invertibrate lump of goo, I would stand up for my beliefs.
Ah well.
Annoyingly, my frequnt changes of mind means tons of loose ends are lying around my comic, just waiting to be tied up (since they were all supposed to be somehow the seed of a new, epic, exciting GA... which never fell in place). Right now, though, I have no idea how to resolve them.
I just hope not too many readers are tripped up by them, for as surely as night follows day and wasps follow a picnic, there will be more.

------------------

Score one for the Extreme Tracker! I already got a hit from this post. Now I have... ANOTHER comic to read. Sheesh!
On a chummy colleague note, I too struggled with the whole goddevil thing because it was my starting point and now I'm kind of cursed with it. Here was my solution. Rename the god character and give the whole universe a different spin. I explained the spin in my cast page and I'm hoping that will be good enough. After all, just because you have a story with biblical characters doesn't mean all of the characters must be biblical.
Unless you already said they were...
------------------

What amuses me is that the devil seems to be dressed in Tommy Hilfiger .. or is that just my imagination? Oddly appropriate.
Plus he looks suspiciously like an old high school chum of mine. But that's just eerie.

------------------

Indeed! I was unable to think of a more appropriate designer brand for Satan. I was going to cover him in designer labels - Diesel, Nike - the works, but thought that simplicity would be more appropriate. As long as I get the message across, eh?

quote:
Plus he looks suspiciously like an old high school chum of mine. It's a right giveaway. If so, then you can wear a T-shirt proclaiming you were once friends with The Fiend. And that he has eaten your soul. Or something.

------------------

I think it must be the hair and the designer clothes. He just looks very High school preppie, which makes sense, him being the incarnation of evil and all. All he needs now is one of those wallet chains and he will be the world's hippest adversary.
Where can I get a shirt like that?
------------------

Once you escape the strict Biblical definitions you also escape the Bible as a guideline for your character. This gives you the benefits of two avatars with indescribable power, set moral definitions, but no relevance to a specific religious system.
Plus, it allows you to write retroactively. If you wanted to kill Satan, you could go ahead and do it.
------------------
