Yeah. Though if I were that guy I'd've done it too, because it's not like he has characters, and he's still doing free association, it just isn't ending in bloody death as often. He'd about style, not content, anyway.
Actually, no, he didn't. They ripped off the style, probably in part because the work of Don Hertzfeldt (the guy who did
Rejected) is both very hip and very recognizable to certain circles. He was none too happy about it, actually. From his
site's FAQ:
2.
Did you direct that terrible commercial I just saw on TV? It sort of looked like you drew it, if you were maybe partially retarded.
No. Don has never had anything to do with the production of a television commercial and has publicly vowed many times that he never will. Sadly, it seems to be the vogue these days for creatively bankrupt corporate types to rip off his work. This is why you may be noticing an abundance of vaguely familiar yet dreadful looking squiggly stick things on tv hawking Pop Tarts or cell phones. It was weird at first but now it's getting very irritating.
This also brings up a very interesting point. If they're interested in going through correct channels, and giving me gobs of money for usage rights, then I think I'd rather take advantage of that fact. Otherwise, and let's face a few facts here, they have the resources to just take what they want, change it a leeeetle bit, and call it "original", screwing me over, and gaining me nothing at all but a hit in the pocket book and in the reputation. It can happen, and, unfortunately, it does happen. So, take the money, and run!
