If loved the book the The Prince of Tides by Pat Conroy. His writing style is very enveloping, once you start you won't want to put it down. It is essentially a bunch of little stories within one main story.
If you like more real stuff, Flu by Gina Kolata is another book that captivates you. It is all about the study of the 1918 flu epidemic, but told in an interesting way.
From what I understand, in the States, most people read The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald, in secondary school. If you haven't read it yet, GO READ IT! It is very de-constructed in style, and that makes it a wonderful read. Definitely one of the best American lit.
