Okay, we've been batting this around the egroup with much approval so I thought I'd throw it out here as well.
We've been discussing the creation of an award that would be chosen and voted on by us, the Keen artists. We would nominate and vote for the best in a list of catagories.
Of course the first step is to compile a list of catagories. This is what we have so far:
Best Comic
Best Art
Best Writing
Best Concept
Best Newcomer
Best Special Event
Best Male Character
Best Female Character
Best Supporting Male Character
Best Supporting Female Character
Best Serial Comic
Best Gag Comic
Best Sci-fi Comic
Best Fantasy Comic
Best Dramatic Comic
Best Gaming Comic
Best College Comic
Best "Other" Genre Comic
Best Romance
Best Running Gag
Best Catch Phrase
Dirtiest Comic
Sexiest Male Comic
Sexiest Female Comic
We need to edit and finalise this list before we can start making any nominees, so please make you suggestions for additions or subtractions

------------------

Why edit the list at all? I think it's perfect the way it is. It pretty much encompasses all of Keenspace, which is what an awards thingie should do.
Am I wrong?
KOWTLT

Best Product Placement
No, serriously. This is a good idea. A few other catagories could be:
-Best Animal/Non-human character (for all those robots and animals out there)
-Most Helpful Cartoonist (forum-wise)
-Best Website Design
-Best "Inside Joke"
-Funniest Individual Comic
-Best Cameo/Crossover (or is this like Best Special Event?)
-Best dropdown (Okay, it's a stretch)
Give me some time, I'm sure to think of more
So what are the awards going to be called? The Schulzs? The Crosbies? The Silver Spaces? Hmmm?
Now all I need is to get my comic out in the public eye and I can sweep the awards!! Mwahahahaha! <A HREF="http://breakpointcity.keenspac ... e.com/

Although I have no business commenting on this awards planning, I'd just like to say I bet you people could come up with a better name for it than one that sucks up to one of the popular webcomics or cartoonists..... I
mean, SOME webcomics weren't inspired by Sluggy or breathed or Sparky.. ^_^
Just my 2 lincolns...
Mike "Although I like 'The Crosbies" Leffel

-!?- Or can any comic be nominated? If so how could you have it so the big comics (PvP, Penny Arcade, Sluggy, etc) don't win year after year? Unlike movies which are here one season and on DVD/Video the next, most comics run for years, and the top ten for each year is always more or less the same.
As for the list The only additions I'd add are BPC's "Best non-human" and the next logical step: "Best supporting non-human".
Expanded at the absolute most to "Best male anthopromorhic/animal", "Best female anthopromorhic/animal.", and "Best inoganic character", with corrisponding "Best supporting- ". That's another six catagories to a list of twenty-four.
Most of the other suggestions, IMO, would fall under the ones already listed.
------------------

Feh.
You think we can't beat Keenspot's Ass?
I say we include 'em. We outnumber them if nothing else, and most of the nomionators AND voters will be Space. If readers were voting, I'd agree with you, but the voters, the commitee, and the nominations are all us. If you don't think you can judge between a bad 'Spot and a good 'Space, well, I'm sorry, but maybe you shouldn't be doing something as taxing as cartooning.
Besideds, on a purely selfish level, having 'Spot included means links from 'Spot and 'Spot nominees, so readers will see our awards presentation, and the OTHER nominees and winners will benefit greatly thereby.
I think Keenvention should host, unless it gets its own site. If it's to be annual, it probably should be.
And all participants should be going link0-happy with the nomination site as soon as it's up, coz that'll help us all.
Might even get it in the papers, ne?
------------------

I do believe I agree with PDI about letting the 'Spotters in. It would make this a big win-win situation for everybody on the 'Space, whether you win an award or not. If people are really concerned about the 'Spotter kicking our butts, perhaps we could have Best 'Space and Best 'Spot award rather than Best Comic.
And to keep the nominations somewhat orderly in the future, perhaps from the second year on (if it is to be an annual event), past winners could nominate and then everyone vote based on that? As I understand it, that's the model used by the Academy for the Oscars.
My one suggestion for a category would one that the Eisners have: Talent Deserving of Wider Recognition. I suppose it's kinda like the Best Newcomer award, but I think that this one is more inclusive. Yay for inclusivity!
------------------

If we include the 'Spotters, we run back into the problem of having one comic consistently winning an award because that comic is there to stay. One way around this (now that I think about it) is that upon winning an award, that comic is no longer
eligible to be in that category for the next, say, two years.
This would tie in nicely with the nomination model, as the last winners couldn't nominate themselves or each other.
That would leave just one question; Who does the nominating this year?
------------------

Add an award for best green guy, best talking blue sock, and best use of Mega Man that isn't Bob and George, and I'm there.
Of course you can't vote or nominate yourself though.
