The Wikipedia thread
lets be honest, it's a good thing when we learn something new. taking in information and knowledge that our peers and friends may or may not be aware of can help push us foward in life. through knowledge we grow as people, through knowledge we can learn more about ourselves the ones we love and care for as well as the very world around us.
so I declare this thread a thread of learning, no matter how funny strange or stupid the acctual content is. after all knowing is half the battle.

Cedi has an uppercase C, the cent has a lowercase C, when written in official papers. It's right there in the article.Honor wrote: Uh... Yeah, it is.

Re: The Wikipedia thread
Arachnogenic Necrosis
I was watching Venom: 9 Ways to Die on Discovery(I think), and they brought up the term.
I also spent time searching for this on Wikipedia because I first heard the term as Necrotic Arachnidism(or Necrotizing Arachnidism) and was stumped on finding that in Wiki. I had to go through the Brown Recluse entry to the White-tailed spider, to the Main necrosis entry, which is subdivided into several categories including this one.

I got an email today about grease fires (the same as what's shown here), and I was trying to find something to corroborate the "2 sticks of dynamite" claim at the bottom. SO far, I've found matching claims of between one and ten sticks, but no actual science.
I have, however, found a number of other fire departments that say the wet towel idea is bad because if you have any excess water, it can drip off the towel into the pot of grease, giving you a steam explosion.

Starting at 2:30-3:22. Anti-safety demonstration of a deep-fried turkey disaster on Good Eats. It's quite impressive.
As for a greasefire, that's why they make wet chemical extinguishers. I'd let a pan sit on the stove and burn itself out before it'd try to throw a wet towel over it(WTF?).

Re: The Wikipedia thread
Any fire extinguisher also has the possibility of blowing the grease out of the pan. The lid for the pan is usually a much better idea. Also, do you mean dry chemical?RavenxDrake wrote:As for a greasefire, that's why they make wet chemical extinguishers. Re: The Wikipedia thread
Nope. Wet chemical, or Potassium acetate, extinguishers are designed to fight grease and oil fires by creating a soapy, non-reactive foam that simultaneously covers the oil and cools it below it's ignition temperature. They are specfically designed for grease and oil fires, and are only rated for A and K (Wood and comon combustables, and kitchen and oil, respectively) fires.
But yes, extinguishing the flames with a tight fitting lid is generally preferable to attacking it with an extinguisher, but the extinguisher is preferable to trying that idiotic wet towel wrap.
