Typically the rope connecting his billy club together is lashed around like a whip, though generally not around him so much as in front of him. That being said, the billy club is also generally pictured being held in both hands, not thrown.
I can remember some images where it is thrown, but there's no whip like effect to the cord. It may be doing something funky like twisting in a spiral, but not like that.
Can't....hold back...its Daredevil....
actually there's lots of pictures where its like that. Its comics so physics is out the window more times than not.

Now a couple of notes however. DD doesn't just toss the baton and it not just a simple cylinder. The batons are weighted and designed to be thrown. not like a throwing knife, but with the butt of the weapon in the palm, and thrusted forwards.
I've never really seen the Batons used in whip-like effect. There were times (like the bendis run) when I wasn't reading DD, but usually its more of a batman's grapple hook sort of look.
ha ha, thankfully artists aren't as exaggerated with the baton line like Jimmy Palmiotti, and Joe Quesada. And yes, the physics for it all are not accurate in any realm of the imagination, but since when have comics ever been.
*hopes he wasn't rude... just a daredevil geek*
