Akira is old school. It's one of the first and best of the anime genre. I can't think of a better place to start.

I loved the first two volumes of Dominion but wasn't so keen on the later additions and I seem to recall watching Robotech when I was really young but only a few episodes. Bubblegum Crisis I just never got round to checking out.
If we're going to compare old here I remember buying Guyver when it was released monthly on VHS by Manga and the good Devilman - not the terrible one I recently discovered was made in the 80s that completely butchered it. *flexes anime ego* Oh and Appleseed when it was first released, it's quite sad looking back to think that nearly everything you bought back then was dubbed, well at least in the places I could find it.

Oh and for whoever liked the Coyboy Bebop movie if you can find the series you should watch that as well. I've never seen the movie but the series was great.
Also Hellsing Ultimate is up to three OVAs now and while not as serious as the older series is much better in my opinion and apparently a lot closer to the original manga (which I haven't read)

Coincidentally both those series must have two of the best soundtracks ever.

Oh, there are a few good ones I just remembered, too.
Armored Trooper: VOTOMS and The Record of Lodoss War are a pair of pretty good series. i would most definitely recommend them.

Fruits Basket was actually my first anime series, and it still holds a special place in my heart. I'm a shoujo otaku, and particularly a mahou shoujo nut, so my tastes are obviously biased, but my list of favorite anime series is included on this page:

The best one for universal appeal, I'd say, is Hikaru no Go. I have yet to meet anybody, shounen fan or shoujo fan, who has watched that series and not loved it! In fact, even my husband loves it -- and he usually hates all anime in general. It's just that awesomely well-told a story.

Oh, and if you guys want anime series with good soundtracks, anything with music by Yuki Kajiura (or ALI Project, for that matter!) totally rules. ^_^

By the way, the nitpicks mentioned on the first post of this thread were things I had noticed, too, but they didn't bother me. After all, I agree with both girls' opinions about the dubbed version! (Grin.)

^_^, I've got over 100 VHS tapes of anime, mostly Ranma 1/2 (have yet to replace them with the DVDs), all of El Hazard 1 & 2, Battle Athletes, Magical Project S, Tenchi Muyo TV, and many others, and I dont even want to get into my DVD collection, too many full sets there. ^_^ God I remember watching the pre-release of Vol 13 to Eva at Project A-Kon in '98, as well as hearing ADV saying that DVDs hadn't become popular enough yet to start using that medium.

Oh man I do sound old..... I swear I'm not that old! Please tell me I'm not that old yet!

You're not that old. I still remember when my family decided not to buy a DVD player because it still wasn't popular - I'm only 19.

I was going to mention this but I wasn't sure about the general appeal. I'm still just watching it online and upto about episode 8/9. If I can find the DVDs over here I'm going to buy them. Damn I really hate the price of anime DVDs.

Also on the DVD subject I think my family owned one pretty early because my dad is a gadget freak. I actually remember the three DVDs we bought with it as well: Blade Runner, Evil Dead 2 and Cruel Intentions.

I have so far been unable to watch much anime. In fact, the only thing i've watched is something I got from youtube.

essentially, i'm a big video game fan, and a friend of mine told me that there was a Devil May Cry anime. As I really liked the games, and the characters and story in them, I've checked all episodes out.

It's pretty sweet. Not as much fighting as the game (by a long way), but it does still have brilliant combat, and the astories tend to be decent as well. I think it's looks very nice as well, good art is a must in an animation.

The thing that really puts me off anime, is the fact that there's often little kids running around giggling at everything, and what I really want is a serious piece of work. This does have a little kid, and is vaguely funny, but is also quite stylish and reserved, plus Dante is awesome cool in it.

The thing that turned me off Full Metal Alchemist was the ridiculous temper tantrums. Ruined the character for me.

I can not imagine the character I saw otherwise acting out that way. Getting aggressive, yes. Acting like a three-year old with a gland problem, no.

Lionel if you're looking for more serioes anime then you could check out some of these:
Devilman - Slightly cimiliar to the Devil May Cry story but with the violence cranked up to 11.
Neon Genesis Evangelion - Considered by some to be the greatest anime ever made and it deals a lot with more adult themes than the typical anime, even if it's lead character is a bit emo.
Boogiepop Phantom - All I can say is complete and utter head %&*$ but brilliant.

I'll try think of some more but I have to head to uni now.
