Haha, nice.
Still, since it is a good topic . . .
I Miss You by Incubus
Carnival of Rust by Poets of the Fall
It's Been A While by Staind
Everything You Want by Vertical Horizon
Mad World by Gary Jules
How's It Gonna Be? by Third Eye Blind
Good Riddance (Time of your Life) by Green Day
I Wish I Felt Nothing by The Wallflowers
I Can't Hide From My Mind by They Might Be Giants
Don't Fade On Me by Tom Petty
And that's enough of a list for now, I think.

I perfer the Arlo Guthrie cover of "The City of New Orleans."
it makes me stop and think and get a little weepy, but then again I have an odd connection to the rail.
it makes me stop and think and get a little weepy, but then again I have an odd connection to the rail.
Riding on the City of New Orleans,
Illinois Central Monday morning rail
Fifteen cars and fifteen restless riders,
Three conductors and twenty-five sacks of mail.
All along the southbound odyssey
The train pulls out at Kankakee
Rolls along past houses, farms and fields.
Passin' trains that have no names,
Freight yards full of old black men
And the graveyards of the rusted automobiles.
CHORUS:
Good morning America how are you?
Don't you know me I'm your native son,
I'm the train they call The City of New Orleans,
I'll be gone five hundred miles when the day is done.
Dealin' card games with the old men in the club car.
Penny a point ain't no one keepin' score.
Pass the paper bag that holds the bottle
Feel the wheels rumblin' 'neath the floor.
And the sons of pullman porters
And the sons of engineers
Ride their father's magic carpets made of steel.
Mothers with their babes asleep,
Are rockin' to the gentle beat
And the rhythm of the rails is all they feel.
CHORUS
Nighttime on The City of New Orleans,
Changing cars in Memphis, Tennessee.
Half way home, we'll be there by morning
Through the Mississippi darkness
Rolling down to the sea.
And all the towns and people seem
To fade into a bad dream
And the steel rails still ain't heard the news.
The conductor sings his song again,
The passengers will please refrain
This train's got the disappearing railroad blues.
Good night, America, how are you?
Don't you know me I'm your native son,
I'm the train they call The City of New Orleans,
I'll be gone five hundred miles when the day is done.

Necro or not, it's an interesting topic.
I nominate "Putting People on the Moon" by the Drive-by Truckers for one of the most powerful yet most depressing songs ever created.
<i>"Mary Alice got cancer just like everybody here
Seems everyone I know is gettin' cancer every year
And we can't afford no insurance, I been 10 years unemployed
So she didn't get no chemo so our lives was destroyed "</i>
Actually the DbTs have a lot of depressing songs (and a lot of uplifting ones too, the band has range.
). I can't tell which is worse, "Putting People" or "Deeper In":
<i>Now, the District Attorney said He might of forgiven
You had lots of reasons to turn out this way
But He'll throw you in jail for them four little babies
you made and delivered along the way...</i>
Great band. Don't listen to them in proximity to alcohol or shotguns.

I nominate Matchbox 20's "Hang".
She grabs her magazines
She packs her things and she goes
She leaves the pictures hanging on the wall, she burns all
Her notes and she knows, she's been here too few years
To feel this old
He smokes his cigarette, he stays outside 'till it's gone
If anybody ever had a heart, he wouldn't be alone
He knows, she's been here too few years, to be gone
And we always say, it would be good to go away, someday
But if there's nothing there to make things change
If it's the same for you I'll just hang
The trouble understand, is she got reasons he don't
Funny how he couldn't see at all, 'til she grabbed up her coat
And she goes, she's been here too few years to take it all in stride
But still it's much too long, to let hurt go (you let her go)
And we always say, it would be good to go away, someday
But if there's nothing there to make things change
If it's the same for you I'll just hang
The same for you
I'll always hang
Well I always say, it would be good to go away
But if things don't work out like we think
And there's nothing there to ease this ache
But if there's nothing there to make things change
If it's the same for you, I'll just hang

Two songs about loss and grief are as follows:
Rocky IV Soundtrack - No Easy Way Out
The Offspring - Gone Away
The former was used during the segment where Rocky drove around in the car and reflected on his life, mainly on his friend who had just died.
The latter was written by the lead singer of Offspring after his first wife was killed in a car crash when their daughter was just a baby.

Caught in the headlamp glare of your own blinding vanity/Mesmerised by the stare of your shallow personality
Gorging the junk food of flattery you drag your fat ego around/Everyone floored by the battering you give to whoever's around
Oh Narcissus you petulant child admiring yourself in the curve of my eyes/Oh Narcissus you angel beguiled unsated by self you do nothing but die

Jeez, what is WRONG with you people? That is the ultimate sad/depressed song on the planet!
Okay, maybe not the *ultimate* but I'd think someone would have mentioned it by now...
If you want depressing, i'd go for metallicas last album. That was a ball of depression if i've ever heard of one. I can't believe i paid money for it...
