In bad need of geekery
In bad need of geekery
Hey folks. I've been reading weregeek for a good couple of months now, and it was not until I checked out what was in the forums that I realized what a powerful resource webcomic community can be. I've actually become even geekier, a thing I thought completely impossible, and I am busy "attaining" a few core rule books for Rifts even as I type, a game I had never even heard of before.
But, to the point: Due to circumstances (partially) outside of my control, my life has been turned on its side, and I have moved from the north east to the Midwest, Colorado to be specific. I mention this in the hopes that one of you wonderful nerds will be able to point me towards some online resource or guide or list or something, so I can hook me up with a group of local gamers.
Before, it was just me, a couple college friends, a table and a bunch of D20s, so I've never had the need to look online for this type of thing before. What searching I've done on my own has led me to a board gaming group, which is holding off the worst of the withdrawal symptoms.
I am above nothing at this point in time, I am even considering LARPing, a part of the hobby I have mocked openly ever since that youtube video of the Lightning Bolt Kid came out... although I would prefer to keep some of my dignity intact and stay away from boffer stuff. I am open to all games and systems, anything and everything.
I know, as geeks, we have all been lonely before, but I'm seriously dying here. Can someone please help me?
Thanks in advance

But - you're THAC0, aren't you already a dead mechanic?
Theres little hints scattered all over the place on these forums, some of the most popular involve facebook and becoming a bookstore ninja.
Also, we happen to have a dungeon crawl up and running on this forum, which it seems one player has bowed out of.
We (meaning I) have been tempted to start up a second RP on the forum for those who are interested, but came too late to join the Dungeon Crawl (Plus, it might give Narf some time as a PC)
I'm in Japan, right now, as you can see by my location, so can't give any area-specific help.
I'm pretty sure thhe others here are ready and willing to punce on helping you.
And so, Lions, out the gates!

Well, it would TECHNICALLY be a dungeon, according to DnD, terms, but "City run by a LE government" adventures that I tend to enjoy might not be traditional dungeon crawls.

Have a party filled with Lawful Evil characters? Have a party full of Rogue multi-class characters? Start at level, what is it, six I think, so that I can play my pre-made Neutral Evil Minotaur Warrior?
He breaks things real good.
But yes, point me to the right thread and I'll totally join up. 3 or 3.5 ? I only own 3.5 books, but I can "aquire" some 3.0 books if really necessary. The internets is a wonderful thing.
And what is this about Honshu, Japan? That sounds like a story.

I'm thinking more Good-aligned chars in a LE city, for some reason I haven't made up, yet.
(Also, starting level would be low, yet let everybody show the charecter idea you've come up with, say, three?)
Honshu Japan isn't much of a story. I'm in the Navy, I'm stationed in Japan. Honshu is the name of the main island.

First off, if that is the way you will be running your campaign, awesome, I will play regardless. I do, however, have a few opinions (of course
). I open the following topics for debate:
Shouldn't character allignment be up to the player? Better yet, secret? If the players turn on each other it's just a different kind of drama. I'm not a PvPer by nature, but I LOVE when there is tension not just between you and your DM, but between the players as well. Not all players should want the same things, that just makes sense, and if their different objectives give rise to conflict, and as long as your party members act maturely, you can have TONS of fun. See Order of the Stick for more reasons why characters of varying allignments can make for a fun party (specifically the Chaotic Evil Halfling Barbarian/Ranger).
Level three is a decent starting level, you can get to median levels pretty quickly. I find, however, that at levels five and under, your character concept isn't going to be very well developed unless you are a nonstandard race with a +1 or +2 level adjustment, or you have scads of feats by making a Human Fighter.
On a completely seperate topic, Thanatos, after rereading your previous post, I need to ask you a thing or two.
1) Do I really need to make a facebook?
Seriously, fuck facebook, I've managed to stay away from that god forsaken evil since it was borne into this world, must I do away with all those years of vigilance now? In short, is there another way?
2) What the hell do you mean by book store ninja?

Okay, Navy-man evens the playing field.Dustman wrote:I freely admit to having no idea what either of those are, so I guess we're even (Unless youse were bein' sarcastic-like, in which case you win).Thanatos5150 wrote:Durrr... I is an ASW Tech and A Metoc Observer, this Boolean tells me nothing.

So, its What? Navy - 1, Army/Marine - 1?
@thac0 ~ Alignment is mutable. Definantly up to the player.
And the reason I used three is for a small level adjustment due to monster template (Planetouched comes to mind). As well as the ability to throw a dual-class out there. Thats what I meant. Fifth level is where the fun begins, IMHO. For example, the paladin gets his/her mount, and I would prefer more choice in THERE then presented in the PHB. (Offical note: I HATE the 3.5 rules for a paladin's mount. hatehatehatehatehate. I mean, why does the Wizard/Sorceror have his/her framiliar with them at all times? Why don't THEY get the option to summon/dismiss the framiliar to get it out of trouble and such? HM? /rant)
I figure a couple levels below fifth works out so the charecters are a bit salty, yet not yet coming into their own.

Facebook isn't actually evil. Most of it is stupid teenagers, but they're not evil. Hardly anybody over 23 uses Facebook: mostly it's for high school and college kids keeping track of each other and chilling out, and as a super-easy way to upload photos and share them with everyone, even non-Facebook people. It is full of stupidheads, but so is the planet: that doesn't make it evil.
People can't view your profile unless you friend them, which is a mutual process (you and I have to agree that we're friends in order to see each others profiles). Facebook also authenticates names and school years, so people are exactly who they say they are. (Unlike myspace, which has sucky security and on which you should NEVER use your real name like you should NEVER go walking alone and unarmed at 3 AM in a neighborhood known for violent crime.)
I'm thinking about posting a link to one of my facebook photo albums on here, but then I'd be sharing my real name and picture on a part of the internet that is open to the public, which makes me nervous. PM me here to get a link of about forty pictures of my cutesy-wutesy little puppies (which only took a minute or so to upload). I may not send you the link if you seem like a strange lurky person who doesn't post on Weregeek.
Bookstore ninjas are people who hang out in the science fiction, fantasy, gaming or manga section of a local bookstore and wait for a local geeky person to wander by and befriend them.
I volunteer to be sort-of present in the roleplay, but I am youthful and irresponsible and may not be present all the time.

I do that! Both of those, actually! I used to do the latter more often, especially when I lived in Massachusets, although occasionally, I would have a fighting knife hidden on my person. I never once had to use it.khayankh wrote: (Unlike myspace, which has sucky security and on which you should NEVER use your real name like you should NEVER go walking alone and unarmed at 3 AM in a neighborhood known for violent crime.)

Nonstandard races (Okay, races with level adjustments) make my head hurt, although admitidly, I am working on that Tiefling Bard (at level three, so its not an Invisible Blade, yet <Currently, its written as an Outsider 1/ Bard 2>) just to keep my mind occupied when I don't wanna study anymore.

Heh. I'm not that good at munchkining. Mostly because it breaks my limit of, well -
'The amount of effort put into any endeavor should be no more than the satisfaction gained from the task and the importance of the task itself.'
Or in other words, munchkining is too much work for too little back. Cheating is fun in singleplayer games for a little while, but I prefer a challange and earning stuff. Even just starting high-level is less satisfaction, because there's less to the character. Playing a cheated high-stat character is like playing a shell.

Re: In bad need of geekery
Hey do not knock LARPing until you tried it ^-^ I have met some awesome people through LARPing. Also you say that you are in Colorado how close are you to Colorado Springs?thac0 wrote: I am above nothing at this point in time, I am even considering LARPing, a part of the hobby I have mocked openly ever since that youtube video of the Lightning Bolt Kid came out... although I would prefer to keep some of my dignity intact and stay away from boffer stuff.
Also I can feel you on being uprooted. I started grad school about a year ago and had to leave some great people ( people who I could game with and do nerdish things with ) and start from scratch. Thankfully I found out about anime club and met some cool people there. It was not until recently that I got to game / LARP again (after like an almost year long drought XP ).

Wow. Low level characters don't have any character concept to them?
Heh, well, I suppose it's the LARPers in the group that have fully fleshed out ideas and backgrounds for their starting level adventurers.
Alignment being secret is actually really good but it's just inconvenient in this environment. It's awkward and suspiscious in tabletop and in an environment like the forum it is just going to drag the game down. If the DM is up to the extra work of secrecy then the IC thread can have very little game mechanic information. You just all have to write a bunch of PMs.
If a second game starts I'm interested but my work computer has been having problems with all of the comicgenesis sites lately, beyond the server crashes. So I don't know if I'd be physically able to post often enough.
Finally, Lawful Neutral Fiendish Aasimar Fighter 5 /Ranger 6.

I am about an hour from Colorado Springs...? ...I think. I am in Denver, and like I said, I'm new to the area... so I'm not really sure. Why? You know some folks?
As for the LARPing, I actually exhagerated my distaste for the concept... I was telling the truth about my hesitation to try boffer, but I think doing a Mage the Awakening LARP might be kind of neat... you would get a much better variety of costume than you would for a Vampire LARP (black and black and black and, oh wait, red.)
... Fiendish Aasimar? Thats like having a lawful good tiefling, or a Chaotic Good Drow... Oh wait. Never mind.
And if you didn't get that joke about the chaotic good Drow, YOU ARE PART OF THE PROBLEM!!!

Drow haven't been Evil since they became a player race, now they;re ALL Chaotic Good rebels...
Lawful Good Tieflings would basically spen all their time in Jail, wouldn't they?
Fiendish Aasamir - wouldn't the fiendish outweigh the celestial blood?
