Another police sketch artist whose artwork is criminal...

Post by Rkolter »

Good grief.

This was from CBSNews.com

I think, if I worked at it, I could actually draw this well. And, it's a well known fact I suck at art.

Who the HELL hired this person to do the police sketch?

*shrugs*

It looks like an average police sketch to me.

Police sketching is a hard business. You've got nothing to go on but a description; drawing from observation is much easier.
This is going in my notebook titled "Things I Didn't Know about Surface Dwellers."

I think the sketch looks good.
I'm glad 90's style forum signatures don't exist anymore.

It's a good sketch. If you're trying to become a comic artist. It's a hell of a good sketch if you're someone starting out in art. It's a pretty damn poor sketch if your job is to draw people who kill people, to help other people catch those murderers.

There are a lot of people in these forums who I've witnessed hands down do better work than this (and this has to have been a final work - the guy isn't a new criminal, this picture's been out there). I find it hard to believe that this artist was the most qualified candidate for the job.

I still pretty much agree with Kolter on this one...but I still do have to mention that I have seen a lot worse.

You have to remember that the sketch artist is trying to draw a real person. Many "real" artists get a bit of freedom and can exaggerate features and stuff.

The less the drawing looks like a person, the more we "fill in the blanks" and it looks more real to us. It's that whole uncanny valley Scott McCloud business.

I seriously don't see a problem with this sketch that needs a peanut gallery bashing it...

This guy isn't drawing realism, because if he did then he'd never be able to, why? Because people see different things when they look at a face... The police doesn't have the imagination, the victim does... So... The fault really lies with the communication between police sketchist and victim.

If you disapprove... Try doing it yourself and you'll get a better understanding, I'm sure.

I actually like this idea... start a thread where we describe ourselves or someone else (no pic references) and see how close the sketch (whoever sketches it) comes?
