Noobiecon

Post by Dennis Kininger »

I don't plan on going to this but I just thought I'd share the news here:

Noobiecon.frih.com

This is a brand new anime and gaming convention at a place called Mohawk Valley Community College. This is a local college about 15-20 minutes away from my library.

Fred was going there back when I first met her. Redtail went there and I think Joy went there too...please correct me, if I'm wrong, Joy.

It's actually a nice college, I've taken a few classes there but my undergrad degree is from Utica College...another local college...and they've been building and renovating the past few years. They used to host a nice, one day comic convention for several years before it quit.

Yes, I would've enjoyed going to this to try out some of the games I've never had a chance to play before but I have to work on Friday and Saturday...plus I'm saving cash for the Pittcon trek next week.

I might stop by on Sunday but I suspect, for a first time event, things will be pretty wrapped up by then. Any other weekend and I would've gone to this.

Oh well...I'm pleased that MVCC is tackling a new convention and I wish them well. We need more convention events like this in this area. Another college (SUNY IT) tried a similar show last year but I haven't heard if they're doing a second one.

Yeah, it's neat that MV is doing a con again.

I'm working this weekend and busy on Sunday so I doubt I'll drive over there.

I'll try to find out how they did and maybe they'll try a second show next year.

I remember Uticon! I first went to that one before I even started going to MV. And once I was enrolled it was nice to have a con right there on campus. ^__^ One year they held it at UC instead, and I talked Stacy into going with me. Someone was selling ElfQuest #1 for $50, but being in college and living on ramen, I was unable to buy it. ;_;

Yeah, Uticon was a nice show and I went to that one Utica College edition...The MV version was better.

I still miss Uticon and wish someone would revive it.

Dennis, I've always wondered if Bob Elinskas actually owned the Uticon name?

I don't believe that comics fans would now bother with an event that I'd attempt and hold. The June MMC is only going to have its chance because of the site and multitude of the opening weekend that brings people that probably wouldn't drive to a comics related event. But might stop in if one was close by and convenient. That's my theory anyway. So exposing people to comics and sequential art along with people in the niche sense advertised on http://www.mightyminicon.com should do well regardless of the 'in-box' nonsense.

Why not just go look?

The US Patent & Trademark Office has an online search engine.
http://tess2.uspto.gov/bin/gate.exe?f=s ... nhlcrd.1.1

Just enter your search terms and see what comes up. In this case, "Uticon" is unregistered:
No TESS records were found to match the criteria of your query.
(TESS is Trademark Electronic Search System.)

So, no, neither Bob Elinskas nor anybody else has ever owned the name Uticon. Register it here: http://www.uspto.gov/teas/index.html

Thank you, MacQuarrie! Not that I was interested in Utica as a con site, but the links are helpful.

Naw...Elinskas never owned the "Uticon" name.

I seem to recall he took the show over from someone else, didn't he?

I applaud MVCC for doing their anime/gaming con and hope they try another.

Yes, you're right. Peter C. and Leon H. had it before that. Memory slippage.
Yes, I applaud MVCC too! Hope they can build it!

Yup! Any conventions in this area can be a good thing.

Let's hope the colleges will try again.
