Anyways, yes. The Ezekiel storyline introduced the possibility that Spider-Man's powers came not from the fact that the spider was irradiated, but because the spider itself wanted to give him these powers and had to do so before the radiation killed it.
The current arc in his story tends towards the totemic powers as we've seen them evolve and expand with Spider-Man: The Other, including his rebirth from death. However, the random mutations from earlier in the comics (Man-Spider) and his irradiated blood all tend towards the science explanation as being the more likely. My theory is that it's a bit of both. The powers come in part from the spider, but to some extent he's been changed by the radiation as well.
Really it was a very interesting twist into his origins, and a plausible one as quite frankly we've seen weirder in the Marvel universe. A spider totem that grants powers to a protector of the people every generation or so? Sure, why the fuck not.

The problem is that while it's an interesting twist, having Spider-Man be destined or so or linking him to some mystic otherworldly force makes it a lot more difficult for the appeal of Spider-Man of being an everyday guy who happened to have a bad break.Laemkral wrote: Really it was a very interesting twist into his origins, and a plausible one as quite frankly we've seen weirder in the Marvel universe. Marvel : When in doubt, pull the radiation out!
Seriously though, I'm LOVING THIS. This could become a safe sex campaign. And the HENTAI SPIN OFFS. This is all too good.
Signs of boredom :
Spider-man, Spider-man
Does whatever a spider can
Beds a wench, any size
STDs, they're just lies
Look out! Here comes the Spider-man!
Is he strong? Listen, chum!
He's got radioactive cum!
Can he jizz out a thread?
Take a look overhead.
Hey there, man-juice in your eye oh damn.
In the chill of night,
At the scene of the crime
Like a streak of light
Threads shooting in the sky
Spider-man, Spider-man
Friendly neighborhood Spider-man
Healthy dame, or a whore
Action is his reward
To him, life is a great big bang-up
Wherever there's a hand job.
You'll find the Spider-man!

I have to ask though: Why do they call him Spaiiiidah-mon! instead of using the Japanese words for spider and man and cramming THOSE together? I'm not complaining though, that's probably the best part about the whole thing.

What kind of radiation is it?
I mean there's different kinds.
And if it's going to kill MJ it would kill Spiderman too. Because radiation poisoning is what happens when your cells and DNA get fucked up by radioative emissions, and it's not like there's some kind of super DNA that's immune to radiation. That's not how it works. Spiderman would destroy himself with his own radioactivity, i.e. he wouldn't be Spiderman, he'd be Peter Parker, dead from radiation poisoning.
However, maybe it was cervical cancer. Low levels of radiation exposure that would not otherwise cause any harm, similar to exposue from the sun, could possibly have affected MJ's cervix, which would be exposed to less radiation since, obviously, the sun doesn't shine there, and due to rapid cell division in that area of the body, makes it prone to cancer. Cancer of the reproductive cells is usually fatal because reproductive cells are designed to divide rapidly, and the out-of-control growth that cancer causes is thus enhanced.

Not gamma radiation, obviously, since that would have turned him green.Tellurider wrote:What kind of radiation is it?

To be fair, this is a superhero comic... I mean, what kind of radiation would warp a spider so that it could bite someone and transfer its ablilities in the first place?
Would Spider-Man's man-bits be just as prone to getting cancer this way, too?Tellurider wrote: However, maybe it was cervical cancer.
