How do you arrange your bookshelf?
I'm reworking my shelf, trying to make room for all my books and I suddenly wondered how other people do this. Generally, I arrange by size first, then author, then genre. What's your primary method?

Stack 'em randomly in the corner and wish that I had a bookshelf.

I put my series of cartoons on one side, and the singles of cartoons/movies on the other side.
THE DVD'S NEEDED ROOM.
Also, on the top shelf, the only occupants are Dr. Joey, Megatokyo 1-3 (I was a fan once ._.), Errant Story 1-2 (see megatokyo), Road Waffles volume 1, Dominic Deegan #1 ( ._____.; ), A large assortment of Marvel/Batman/Sandman, and a bunch of my sketchbooks, Stephen King, some random mtg book, David Gemmell, Neil Gaiman, random authors, and my various how to draw a variety of things books, so those go in alphabetical order based on what they are, be they webcomics, stephen king, other authors, illustration/how-to's.

Caught in the headlamp glare of your own blinding vanity/Mesmerised by the stare of your shallow personality
Gorging the junk food of flattery you drag your fat ego around/Everyone floored by the battering you give to whoever's around
Oh Narcissus you petulant child admiring yourself in the curve of my eyes/Oh Narcissus you angel beguiled unsated by self you do nothing but die

Just plonk 'em on, I say!
By size; I don't have enough books on my shelf to need any sort of proper organisation.

By Priority. I have two small bookshelves and books to fill them. I prioritize by the need. Drawing books and reference books, research books, etc... near the computer. Including the 5 dictionaries. v.v

Top two rows seem to be novels. These are a mixture of my own, my previous school and university novels, various novel type books of interest, a few complete series, and a few collections of children's novel sets (Treasure Island, 20 000 Leagues, etc) that I ordered through school book clubs and stuff.
Below that, two shelves of fantasy series; Discworld, Wheel of Time (should get book ten eventually...), Belgariad, Death Gate Cycle.
In the middle a shelf bowing beneath the weight of every Footrot Flats landscape comic with the exception of #26 which goes for about $75AU on eBay every time, along with the rest of my comic strip collections.
Below that, my hardcovers and miscellaneous including things like hardbound editions of Three Musketeers, Robinson Crusoe, etc, some classic Australian novels you haven't heard of, and some good heavy factual books focusing on Australians in various conflicts through the two World Wars, this being my latest interest.
Below that, all my big hardcovers like atlases and large collections of things like Astronomy and various historical research books, many with bright pictures.
So no real organisation other than I know where to go to find a certain book relatively quickly. That's all my bookcase needs to be though, eh?

By Size.
Authors obviously get grouped together, but most authors are consistant with their use of publishing companies, so their books are all the same size anyhow. And yes, if I have a choice of publishing companies, I will actively look for the one that has the same size books as mine.
My shelves are divided into genres. And on that shelf, they go from Largest to Smallest ( given author constraints) from left to right.

It's against the wall. Why?
Okay, okay. By author except in special circumstances where a series is written by more than one author, in which case it's the series name. Short story books are seperate, as are non-fiction books. Dumb books are stacked in a single tall pile behind a set of four drawers beneath a cupboard in case I actually decide I want to read them again.

Strictly Chronologically. The one I've read last is always on top of the stack. The stack is on the floor, beside the other stacks.

I do connecting with my graphic novels and TPBs
Start with a marvel series, the next lot along will be a marvel series, then the next will maybe be by the same author, the next in the genre of the last, then maybe another set with simillar characters... yeah, it looks like a mess but i know it isn't. I KNOW.

We try to group ours - try.
The one in the bedroom is all Roleplaying stuff - player sheets, D&D 2nd ed., etc. Used weekly so we need quick access to them for our campaigns.
The shelves of books are grouped by size. The bigger the book, most likely it'll be on the bottom shelves. Also my collegel related stuff all go on the bottom shelf. The rest of the books are toss on shelves to make the most usage of the space.
Then there is half the closet of books still in the boxes.....Damn, we need at least another 4 to 6 books shelves for all our works.
