README: Banner Ad problems (including viruses)

Postby STrRedWolf on Sun Jul 23, 2006 6:13 am

Edit by Dr Neo Lao, 9th July 08: Updated information from STrRedWolf, quoted from page 3:
Okay, time to change the info, since the ad system has changed. Please email keenspot (at) keenspot (dot) com for problem ads. Chris and Teri are handling the ads at this time.

= = end edit = =

Folks, if there's any complaints about banner ads, please read the below.

First of all, there are some banner ads we (Keenspot Entertainment, owners of Comic Genesis) do not tolerate:
  • Ads that install viruses.
  • Ads that have sound that you cannot turn off.
  • Ads which pop-up more ads.
  • Mature Audience ads in non-MA, Non-NC-17, and non-opt-outed MA configured sites.

Comic owners: Make sure you set your Adopt-a-Panda raiting in the newer Siteadmin. Only MA and NC-17 sites will get the mature ads.

Now, if you find one, double check to see if they have a Tagboard or any third-party add-on. Try to rule out any thing else first, it'll make our jobs easier. Then snapshot the ad, and send it to keenspot (at) keenspot dot com and CC tygris (at) comicgenesis dot com. Yes, this is different due to the ad system changes!

If you're using Internet Explorer... well, you're kinda screwed there until Microsoft puts in it's own DOM inspector. But shouldn't you be using Firefox instead, being a much safer browser?

BTW, Tipjars are allowed, as is links to your comic's t-shirt store. Come on, folks! Read your ad provider's TOS. Ours say we can't stack different ones. Thus: If a site is carrying other ad providers, let me know. Any presence of another ad provider is a violation of our AUP.

Ad on my comic site

Postby Swikan on Mon Aug 28, 2006 8:50 am

Today, an ad for an "Intimate Dating" service appeared above my G-rated comic. I don't know how it got into the rotation, but this is the first time I have seen it.

Comic: http://lifesawitch.comicgenesis.com/

Ad: Mate1 Intimate Dating
I don't know what other info you need for the ad, but here is the ad info from the page source
Code: Select all
 <a href="http://www.burstnet.com/ads/ad8223a-map.cgi/ns" target="_top">
<img src="http://www.burstnet.com/cgi-bin/ads/ad8223a.cgi/ns" width="468" height="60" border="0" alt="Click Here" />
</a>

Please mark this ad so that it no longer comes up for G-rated sites.

The code is not the correct ad. We run multiple providers including Burstnet through an IFRAME'd ad system of our own devizing. This is why we ask folks to use Firefox's DOM Inspector (part of it's debugging tools). Telling us the source code will not tell us anything because it will not ID the right ad provider.

I have also pulled out Mozilla to find the ad in question. No dice, can't find it.

Thanks for checking into it! I am using Firefox and if I see it again I will do the DOM inspector.

Interestingly, though I saw it come up several times that day, I have not seen it since. In fact, I thought you had gone in and flicked a switch, but maybe the provider caught it themselves.

Wouldn't you know it came up again today. I didn't see anything in my tools called a DOM Inspector, but I saw a "Page Source" and under the Links tab one of the urls was (returns added so as not to stretch the width of the forum too much). I hope this contains the info you need, but I did save everything else under that tab if you need to see it:

Unfortunately, no. This won't give us the advertiser or the agent who's screwing us. Can you reinstall Firefox, using the "Custom" setting, and making sure the DOM inspector gets installed? Sorry to put you through all of this.

No problem. I am grateful you are helping to get it fixed. I will reinstall firefox and make sure that DOM Inspector is included.

Okay, It's there now!

Is this what you need?:

National Lampoon Presents 'Check Out this Twisted Sister' ad (can be pretty sure that's not G-rated) from: 'http://gavzad.keenspot.com/adserv9001.js?"+gavzadid+";"+ord+"

The "Who is this Sexy blonde" ad: http://gavzad.keenspot.com/burstfn.js

Unsure

Postby Southerndragon on Fri Sep 29, 2006 8:41 am

I'm not sure if this is what you mean by banner problems but two of the pages on my website won't display the comicgenesis advertising banners. I've checked the code:

http://southerndragon.comicgen.com/links.html
http://southerndragon.comicgen.com/taylorbio.html

but it still wont display the ad. Am i doing something wrong?

See this thread. It is a known bug. As long as you have the ***advertisement*** tag at the top of the pages, then you're clear. The ads currently don't show up on secondary pages but that's not the users' fault.

Will someone please tell me, specifically, what is needed from the DOM inspector to report in appropriate ads for my G-rated site?

I have used the Firefox DOM inspector, but there are 10 bazillion "nodes' there, and they all look like information I was told earlier in this thread was not what was needed.

Okay, I am tired of getting "Fredrick's of Hollywood" ads on my G-rated site.

Here is the info from the DOM inspector on the ad service, I THINK:
Code: Select all
<!--
if (adfvalid == true) {
 document.write("<a href='"+afbanloc+"'><img border='0' src='"+replad+"' /></a>");
 document.write("<scri"+"pt language='javascript' src='http://gavzad.keenspot.com/adserv9001.js?"+gavzadid+";"+ord+"'><\/script>");
} else if (gavzadup == "gavzad") {
document.write('<s'+'cript src="http://gavzad.keenspot.com/adserv10.js?keenspace;'+ord+'">');
document.write('</s'+'cript>');

} else {
document.writeln('<a href="http://www.burstnet.com/ads/ad8223a-map.cgi/ns/v=1.0J/sz=468x60A/" target="_top"><img src="http://www.burstnet.com/cgi-bin/ads/ad8223a.cgi/ns/v=1.0J/sz=468x60A/" border="0" alt="Click Here" /></a>');
}

//-->

I hope something in there is useful.

Please folks, I can't use anything from the source code! It needs to be from the DOM Inspector you select from the Tools menu. I've described the process in my first post.

Okay, I see this:

* the full gavzad.keenspot.com URL
* Your site's .comicgenesis.com URL *OR* username (no need for both)
* What date and time you saw it show it's ugly head

I think the gavzad ad url is in that code above, isn't it? I got that info from the DOM inspector.

I just opened up the DOM inspector for THIS page, which is displaying a "Wicked Lasers" ad. If I were doing a report for this page, Which URL would you need?

'http://gavzad.keenspot.com/burstfn.js'

http://gavzad.keenspot.com/adserv9001.js?

http://gavzad.keenspot.com/adserv10.js? ... ce;'+ord+'"

http://gavzad.keenspot.com/ads/0000130/ ... 1223144924

(I will be sure to put the time, too. I forgot that part.)

Um, that's still not the DOM inspector. That's most definitely Page Source. Where there's an '+ord+' should be a number.

Let's do it this way: A graphical trip down. Here's the first part, using my own site here on CG. I've opened it up with a Monster ad on it, and already drilled down into that IFRAME with the "ks_da" ID on it. You'll then see there's another #document in there...

...lets dig into that second, embedded #document. Go into the HTML node, then look at every SCRIPT node. Forget the ones that don't have a src attribute -- they're useless. We want the ones that get pulled in. There's a few comming from "gavads" but the number at the end will change. We need the last gavsad****.js URL with the number at the end.

Here's the bugger! As I said, it'll change with different ads and at different times.

Heya, just asking for clarification on accepting paid banner adds from other comics, can/can't you? My policy would be no banners from commercial sites, only charities and other amateur comics. Would this still violate the TOS?
