I think my comic probably qualifies, though like rcmonroe, I'd rather stay well away from labels; they get kind of, well, limiting at times. Most of my major characters are women. I can't really say that any of them is pushing any particular agenda. They're just people.

Perhaps my definition of a "feminist" story is one in which women are allowed to be just people...as are men.

Gender is meaningless in my comic, does that count? There is little to no difference between the way the male and female characters act. In fact, the strongest personalities in the comic are all female.

For the record, the women who stay at home these days CHOOSE to stay at home, that's the difference. We have that choice now. I may be a stay-at-home mom, but as far as the men in my family are concerned, I am boss of the goddamn universe.

Add to that both sexes being equally flawed, and you have my philosophy.

Not that my comic always shows it. :-?

Despite the fact that about half the cast has their gender literally spelled out in their name.

Yes, despite that fact. :P I didn't say that they didn't HAVE genders, just that their genders weren't important. I'm fairly confident that I could have swapped genders on any of my main characters and it wouldn't really have made a difference.

I think feminism gets a bad rap "hairy legged battle axes bla bla bla" - I am so grateful that I can vote, own land in my own name and have choices open to me that would have been a distant dream to women 100 years ago.

However my comic is horribly misogynistic

I haven't covered any explicitly feminist storylines, but my lead character is dating a professional dominatrix... And she's the only person in the cast who can dissuade him from his really, really bad ideas. Sometimes.

Ditto. I used to be a militant feminist, speaking out against male chauvinism at every opportunity and always yelling at someone for keeping the woman down. But then I cooled off and realized that that just made me look like an idiot. Picketing for women's rights doesn't work anymore, because we've got them. Now, all those unequal things that still exist... such as the Glass Ceiling... are products of society that no amount of protesting and legislation can control. There's only time.

Also... I like some of the perks of being a woman... lower insurance, freedom from the draft, and --let's face it-- we're just sexier.

As for my comic... well, I don't think it counts. Sure, I have strong women in my comic, but not a lot of them, and none of them in the spotlight.
This is going in my notebook titled "Things I Didn't Know about Surface Dwellers."

Naah, that's just the character—with whom I've never felt I'm supposed to sympathize. Your comic depicts horrendous acts, but it's always been clear—at least to me—that it doesn't celebrate said acts.

feminism does not just benefit women, either. men now have the choice to choose traditionally "feminine" roles, like staying at home with their kids or nursing. people are still assholes about it, showing how far feminism still has to go.

the way i see it, and the only people i would feel justified in dismissing completely, are those "feminazis" who beleive that women are better than men, and don't so much campaign for equal rights as greater rights for women.

I do, however, sometimes get annoyed at people who take offence too easily.

as far as comics go...I don't really think in terms o f "-ists" or "isms."
If I had to think on it, I would point to...
legostar galactica(if you don't know it, look around he's here somewhere)
Schlockmercenary
misfile
wapsisquare
girl genius

sorry about the lack of links, but it would require me to take a minute or two of extra work, and I'm just that lazy.

do feminazis actually exist, or is it just a myth created by the right wing to discredit feminism?

Totally- I'm glad you brought that up! It's still a challenge for men who want careers in early childhood education. (which is such a shame)

well, i have no idea if they exist as defined by the right wing. However, I have taken the word and use it where I feel it is apropriate--women who beleive that they are inherently better than men or that they deserve more rights than men.

these people do exist, though mayhap not in such large numbers as you may have been led to beleive.

the phrase "feminazi" was coined in the early 90s by conservative talk radio personality Rush Limbaugh, and for the most part describes the "classic" "hardcore feminist" as seen by the most ignorant of Americans.

Don't be hard on yourself. Your comic is horrible* in so many other ways that misogyny is really the least of its vices.

I don't know, I've met a few women who would fit that bill. Besides, if there are numerous misogynists in the world, why would it be so difficult to believe that there are women who feel the same way about men? It's called misandry.

All of this makes me think of that song by Alanis Morissette.

In the late 80s I picked up a "feminist" newsletter that actually advocated all male-female sex being reclassified as rape, and endored hormone injections for males.

Scary stuff.
