The Newcomers thread
Goodbye Chains started in June of 2006--it's an action historodramedy with Communists and drug addicts and (eventually) wanton property damage.

PK became a favorite of mine upon my discovering it, as did two other newcomers, Modern Love and Fortune's Fools. The former is a funny, poignant, and uncompromisingly idiosyncratic look at human relationships, while the former is a well-crafted, lavishly illustrated fantasy set NOT in a Tolkien-inspired world, but in medieval France. Both are original and excellent.davidcsimon wrote:I think Planet Karen started this year too. It's well worth checking out if you don't know it, I think a serious contender for the Slice of Life category.

I love many of the comics mentioned so far...but Lackadaisy came out of nowhere and set my barn on fire last year. Literally.
Fainting Spells deserves a nod also -- take a look at it.

Newcomer here, too!
I juuuust missed all the fun last year, but I'm excited to be able to get in on all the nominating/voting action this time around.
My comic is Grog, and it's a humourous adventure comic about a group of pirates including an inept yet innocent captain, a long-suffering first mate, and a really sarcastic pirate girl.
Also Scurvy Guy, but we don't like to talk about him.

SpaceBoiz Comic
SpaceBoiz is a gay adult oriented web comic that I started in march 2006.
In the world of 2084 being gay is again illegal. When space cadet Jaime is arrested red handed his friends come up with a plan to steal a space ship and rescue Jaime. Their plan launches them to an adventure through space and, quite possibly, time.
Updates every wednesday.

I kinda feel bad linking Online Offcenter as I'm rather bad at updating. I started it in April 2006, though, so figured I'd better jump on the bandwagon before I'm no longer considered a "newbie". ^.^;

Re: Newcomers
Here's my web comic "Fish Tank" which I started on Feb 8, 2006. It's about the adventures of 3 aquarium fish (one of whom is a technological genius).

Might as well throw my hat in... Brickgirl & Oscar premiered in May of 2006. It's the not-so-touching story of a little girl whose only friend is a brick. I do the writing, the art, and the website. Three guesses as to which one of those is by far my least favorite

I'm pretty sure we still count as new, as we started up in January '06.
I do most of the comic The Prime of Ambition (http://jaadrih.comicgenesis.com/), which is what I tend to call a fantasy drama. It looks, at first glance, like a fantasy epic, but I don't call it that because the plot doesn't involve the ever-famous Hero's Cycle. But it is character driven, so I call it "drama."

I started The Modern Edda February of 2006, so, it's technically still new. Usually it looks not bad, but sometimes it looks a little crummy because I'm sick or something, which happens more often than I'd like.
I'm warning you now, it's not very good.

Another newcomer I can't believe I forgot to mention: Just Another Escape.
I set my ATM card's number to "0001" because I'm number one!

Fainting Spells is new this year and, I think, quite a find.
I could see it in the Outstanding Newcomer, Outstanding Use of Color and/or Outstanding Environment Design categories.

Hey, I know quite a few of you guys from other places, as El or ElnJJ - between us we have three webcomics, Desert Rocks, started in 2001 and currently on hiatus, Between Two Worlds, which was started in Finnish in 2004, but has only been updating in English since summer 2006, now up to 300 pages and which is still largely unknown, but rapidly gaining recognition now, yay! And finally the Broken Mirror, started mid autumn 2006 and up to 36 pages - both of the latter comics update one new page each every MWF, so please do check them out. ^_______^

I'm Scott, most people know me better as madscott from http://www.nightgig.comdavidcsimon wrote:The problem with recognising newcomers is that... umm... they're *new*... so there's a good chance that a lot of people haven't heard of them before. If, like me, you took your first dive into the webcomics world in 2006, then use this thread to let us know! I want to see what I've been missing out on.
I still draw comics (not as often as I want)
I started a series http://www.jacksplat.net a dogs age ago and I am working on a series that I think I am just going to call thunderboy that should be getting off the gtound in february.
I also work on a webcomics podcast called http://www.thegigcast.com
thanks for my moment in the spotlight.
Throwing my hat in the ring for easy trampling: Life's a Witch started in August.
And in order to trample myself, I'd also like you to have a look at One Small Step and Sandusky.
All of these are comedic short form comics. Definitely light, enjoyable reads. (Also perfect for cleaning your mental palate between the beautiful, epic comics I am discovering in this thread.)

I forgot, I also like Family Man. Great site design, interesting character design and love the art style.
This is a story that takes place in Germany during the 1700's.

My strip, GingerDead and Friends also fits the newcomer category.

I never thought there was a chance of being nominated but I've got a couple of emails telling me otherwise, so please take a peek.
There are so many great new comics to choose from in this category. I'm still trying to decide. Thanks for starting this thread up.
Best of luck to you all.

Lords of Death and Life, a historical fantasy set in Pre-Columbian Mexico, started in 2006 and only started updating regularly in November. It's still just getting started, but if nothing else, I think I've got a good shot at nomination for environment design.
I know I've been plugging my other comic (A Mad Tea-Party) in the environment design category, but in the interests of avoiding vote-splitting, I suggest voting for Lords of Death and Life instead.
