Here's how it works: It's like a very, very simple roleplaying game in which you create a character, and then get to be a spectator as your character does battle in a combat arena!. You pick some stats, the type of attack you like to do, the type of attack you are weak against, etcetera. I assign your character a slot in in the competition, and then your character does battle!
There are three ways to win your battle: Either you kill your opponent, you outlast your opponent (they throw in the towel, exhausted). If you both throw in the towel at once, then the battle is reviewed to determine the winner.
Then, I respond in this thread how each combat went - all the attacks, who won, who lost, etctera. I assign the winners to the second round of combat, and on we go until there is a final winner!
Last time, some people drew some of the combat scenes and some of the spectators cheering the battles on!
It's very, very easy to participate. Just respond with the following information:
Name and Describe your character briefly
... so that if someone wants to draw your character, they can. You don't have to use a character from your comic, or your forum avatar.
Choose the type of attack your character will prefer to do:
No one type of attack is any better nor worse than any other. The type of attack you choose will be the type of attack I describe you doing and the type of attack you get a bonus to defend against. If you want, you can choose "Random" And I'll assign one.
Physical - kicking, punching, eye poking, knife fighting, etcetera. Tell me what kinds of attacks your character can do.
Magical - lightning, fireballs, summoning swarms of inssects, etcetera. If your character has a preference, tell me.
Mental - telekenesis, pyrokenesis, spoon bending, etcetera. Any preference?
Technical - use of complex weapons - guns, lasers, etcetera. If you pick this type of attack, you have to tell me what general type of weapon I should describe you using.
Choose the type of attack your character will be weak against:
You must choose one type of attack that your character will be be weak against - if your opponent uses that type of attack, they will do more damage against you, and hit you more often. It can be any of the above four, but not the one your character prefers to do (so if you're good at Physical, you can't pick Physical to be weak to defend against). Again, you can say "Random" and I'll just assign one.
Assign Points:
You have twenty total points to put into the below three statistics. There is no minimum (you can choose to put no points in) nor maximum (besides "20" obviously).
Strength - This determines how much damage you will do. Don't think of it as physical strength; think of it as strength in whatever type of attack you're good at (magical strength, quality of technical weapon, etcetera...) A ZERO in Strength means you do only a little damage with any successful attack. A TEN in Strength means you will do a good amount of damage with any attack you land. A TWENTY in Strength means any attack you land has a good chance from being seen from space with the unaided eye.
Endurance - This determines two things. How much damage you can take before dying, and how many attacks you can deal before you are just too exhausted to continue fighting and throw in the towel. A ZERO endurance means you can take just a little damage before dying, and will throw in the towel after a short combat. A TEN endurance means you can take a reasonable amount of damage before dying and would only throw in the towel if the combat goes long. A TWENTY endurance means you can take about as much damage as a bank vault door, and have never owned a towel in your life.
Agility - This determines two things as well. How likely you are to "land" an attack on someone, and how much damage you can avoid when you do get hit. A ZERO Agility means you are fairly clumsy and when you get hit, you take all the damage. A TEN means you are an excellent shot and when you get hit, you take, give or take, about half the damage you would otherwise. A TWENTY means you use olympic archery and shooting gold medals as drink coasters and take a very minimal amount of damage from any attack that hits you.
Keep in mind: There is an element of randomness to all attacks including damage and chance to hit. The stats of the person you are up against, and the types of attacks both characters are good and weak against significantly affect combat. A zero in a stat is a liability, but not an absolute deal killer, and a twenty in a stat is a boon, but not a guarantee.
Now What Happens:
Once you post your character here, I will take down the information. Then I will do some things to your character, that you won't know the details of:
1) I will randomly add a total of 5 points to your character's stats (yes, a stat can go above 20 in this manner).
2) I will determine randomly how well you can defend against the type of attack you prefer to do (a range of 1 "ok" to 10 "excellent").
3) I will determine randomly how weak you are against the combat type you chose to be weak against (a range of 1 "weak" to 10 "uber-pathetic").
4) Using your endurance as a guideline, I will determine the exact amount of damage your character can take, and exactly how many attacks your character can make before becoming exhausted.
Here is an example character:
And now the stuff you wouldn't know, but I'm showing for example:Name/Desc:
ABOL - A ball of Light. Multicolored cloud of light with a central brighter ball. He floats.
Preferred Attack:
Physical - specifically any kind of photon based attack, and lightning.
Weak Attack:
Magical
Statistics (total of 20 points):
Strength: 12
Endurance: 2
Agility: 6
After I add 5 points randomly, ABOL's stats will become Strength: 15 Endurance: 4, Agility 6.
He has a 7 to defend against his preferred attack (physical) and a 4 for the attack he's weak against (magical). this means he'll take a lot less damage from physical attacks, and somewhat more damage from magical attacks.
He has a meaker 9 hit points, meaning he'll die pretty quick if he's hit. And he can do 7 attacks before he gets exhausted.
