I Hate Netscape.
I had to reinstall Netscape (which I use because IE is retarded and I get too much spyware, popups and viruses when I use it) and now I can't remember how I got the stupid Autocomplete/Autofill feature disabled. (when i go to a website that requires a username, after a few letters I get that retarded pull-down menu that lists everything I've typed in that box. I hate it because my Tab key doesn't always work, so i frequently end up with 'Usernamepassword' showing up on the list.)
All the websites I've gone to tell me one of two things A) how to clear the Autocomplete data, but not how to disable it or B) to follow a bunch of menu commands that do not exist.
Netscape has the most retarded options menu I've ever seen, and I know you can't actually stop it from working through the options menu.
I've done it before, but it seems to me that I somehow ended up messing with the internal workings of the browser, i remember that i had to actually go into a screen full of text (or code?), search for the term "autocomplete" and change "ON" to "OFF". Anyone know how to do this?

I've used firefox before, and it was okay, but i never really got comfortable with it, although I'm sure that since then, firefox has probably adopted all the features that i like in netscape and probably doesn't have the retardedness of netscape.
I like the tabbed browsing (which i think everyone has now), and the pop-up blocker (which works better than the other browsers i've tried, i only get about one pop-up a month successfully getting through), And i like how you can switch from "display like firefox" to "display like internet explorer" when the pages aren't showing up right.

I for one reccomend opera, unless you use GMail... in that case, go firefox.
Opera looks intimidating at first, too, so you might want to have it be the kind of thing where you set aside an hour and read all the tutorials and get to know it... Firefox is more of an install-and-go affair.
But Netscape? Eh.

Try clearing the "Datacard Manager." If that fails, clear 'em all, or look for a "clear all/erase all" button.

Is there a way to disable tabbed browsing in firefox/opera? That is the main reason I refuse to use firefox. I like all the features, and even the change to the way the bars and downloads isn't too bad, but the tabbed browsing drives me nuts. Would it be possible to make it resemble IE in most interface aspects?
Now, if we could get tabbed video editing in premiere, that's a different story.

Sucks to be you even Internet Exploder has gone to tabbed browsing. I think the majority of people prefer the tabs as opposed to having multiple tabs along the bottom of windows when multitasking. ie open more than 3 exel or word documents and they just stack as one tab if anything else has a window open.orwell wrote:Is there a way to disable tabbed browsing in firefox/opera? Tabbed browsing is not mandatory, links that open in a new window according to the HTML tag attributes will open in a new window when using Firefox, they will not open in a new tab. Furthermore, the default behaviour is only to display the tab bar when multiple tabs are open (I prefer it open, so I've set it as such) and so if you never open a new tab, you'll never see it.orwell wrote:Is there a way to disable tabbed browsing in firefox/opera? It seems rather silly to refuse to use a program over a feature that is only used at your own option.
Opera: Right-click on any of the menu bars, select "Customize" from the menu, and un-check "Tab Bar"
Firefox 1.5: Tools -> Options -> Tabs -> Check "Hide tab bar when only one tab is open" Then just don't middle-click or open any tabs (doesn't sound like that'll be a problem for you).
Firefox 2.0: Tools -> Options -> Tabs -> Make sure "always show the tab bar" is unchecked. As long as you don't open any tabs, you won't see the tab bar.
IE 7: You really should use one of the other browsers; this thing is pitifully slow. But if you insist...
Tools -> Internet Options -> Advanced -> Scroll to very bottom -> Uncheck "Enable tabbed browsing"

Pitifully Slow on IE? Not really, compared to Firefox(for me) as trying to right-click, save as anything in Firefox locks it up for about 15-20 seconds... If anybody knows why that's happening, I'd love to know, but for right now it's actually quicker to open the link I want to save in seperate tab and use DownloadThemAll's one click to get it.... at least on things that I can DO that with.

All this does is clear the information, I'd have to do that after every use of the computer, what I want is to get it to stop storing the damn stuff in the first place. If i use the "clear my tracks on exit" option, i'll lose all my cookies and i'll actually have to remember my login info for every site i visitTo answer your question:

The cool thing about Firefox is the add-ons, third party plug-ins which you can download through the Firefox website. I started using it after having used Opera for quite a while, and right away I was able to find add-ons that duplicated the features I missed. (Mouse gestures and ability to control which if any graphics on the page load.) So you can really do alot of customization that way. I'm content to use it with tabs, but it looks like they're pretty much potional. It'd still be nice to have a way to completely disable the feature so it wouldn't get in the way... maybe there is, I haven't checked for an add-on.orwell wrote:Is there a way to disable tabbed browsing in firefox/opera? Opera on the other hand will totally try to cram tabs down your throat. At least the current version will, verious versions allow tabs to be disabled to different degrees. Version 8 is pretty good about letting you choose.
I love tabs, since I tend to have about 40 Opera windows open at a time. I don't like Windows XP's menthod of dealing with multiple windows, and I like to be able to quickly switch between internet browsing and other things without hunting and pecking.
Also, IE is notorious for bringing down the whole system when it crashes, and for being ideal for spyware and adware and viruses leaking into one's system. In fact, I think it tries to make you be more susceptible.
Ever since I used Opera, I've had almost no viruses/spyware/adware. The few that ever popped up were probably due to programs that I myself installed.

I know that, and I unchecked that box. I'm just saying that there are times when "grouping" comes in handy, but I hate how Windows does it, and Opera does a much better job.Jetsetlemming wrote:Right click on the start button. I actually run both IE and Firefox. If I'm going to sites I don't trust or don't know, I hit it up with FF first. Sites I know pretty well I'll visit with IE(I also use IE to snag pics on pages that my download accellerators in FF won't work right on). I usually run Search and Destory every 3-5 days and I don't really have a problem.
Running Win 2k I've only had IE crash on my very few times, and while it did kinda crash the desktop, it didn't require a restart to get things running again(in fact, knock wood, aside from when my old videocard malfunctioned, I've never had a hard system lock with this box).
But, like all things computer, it varies greatly from person to person.

I do, too. However, FF is my main Browser. I use IE for sites that firefox won't work on, or that you're practically forced to use IE on (Like windows updates. Protip for everybody, btw, turn off automatic updates and check them yourself every two days or so. Don't let it automatically download and install things without you checking.), and for download sites that, instead of having a download link, have the download start automatically. For some reason, this behavior borks Flashgot and Getright, and I end up downloading a "index.php" file instead of what I want.RavenxDrake wrote:I actually run both IE and Firefox.
