Alright, so I've decided to get my tongue pierced! I'm going to get it done after I've finished with my orthodontic work and next week will be when I find out how much longer I've got to wear my retainer/ when I can stop wearing my retainer.

I was wondering if any of you had advice on piercings and after care for tongue piercings especially, and also nipple because I'm considering getting my nipples pierced next year.

I've had my tongue pierced for around 3 or so years now so...

Take your aftercare seriously, also, be careful how you eat, having the barbell in your mouth takes some serious getting used to. Also, invest in a clear retainer or clear plastic barbells for job interviews and such.

Being pierced wasnt so bad, but during my healing process, my tongue ached like crazy. They'll probably pierce you with a 3/4" barbell so that when your tongue swells you wont have problems; but, once it heals switch it out to a 5/8" barbell for normal use, that 1/8" is bigger than you might think.

also, avoid clacking the balls against your teeth, over time it can hurt your teeth (also, it bugs the crap out for some people) and it goes without saying, but be sure to avoid biting on the barbell, its unavoidable, but try not to, it sucks.


also, you might want to carry around a replacement barbell in-case the regular one falls out (I once had to drive from las vegas to los angeles with my tongue pushing on the roof of my mouth because the ball fell out, it was lame)

Stick with a well-made barbell with internal threading, the problem is that, depending on what you get, it can be expensive, so dont lose it. I like either only surgical grade stainless steel or plastic (I cant remember exactly what type), Putting plastic balls on metal posts doesnt work well. An advantage to having stainless steel is that you can clean it now and then with a denture cleaner. But be sure to have a backup barbell, as the tongue-hole will close up very very very quickly, especially while its healing.

If it gets infected never remove the jewelry, that tends to make things worse, just contact the piercer quickly and they'll probably be able to help you out. With proper sterilization and after-care, you should be right as rain, just be diligent about the salt-water washes and such.

make sure you go somewhere with good reputation and that with the nipple jewelery that if they are using captive beads that the ring is big enough. I almost gave up on mine. After a year finally decided while it still wasn't completely healed, it was healed enough I could try replacing jewelery. Had barbells put in, and thank goddess I did. was healing curved because the rings were too small. Have had few problems since barbells were put in. In other words, research, research, research. Don't just go to the first place you run across that will do it.

This is a good place to start looking for info.

yeah, make sure they have/use/maintain proper sterilization. also, ask questions, it'll inform you and I've found it can be comforting; if the person knows what he/she is talking about, it tends to give me more confidence in their abilities/practices.

Professionalism is very important, they dont have to be all serious all the time, but they have to be serious about what they do.

Yep, I've got a piercer already picked out. I went with a friend to get her tongue pierced last year and the piercer she saw was really good. He was friendly and talkative, walked her through it all and he used sterile needles and put on clean gloves, made her rinse her mouth out with strong mouthwash first. He was great.

On the nipple part, it looks like I'm going to have to wait until I'm 18 before I get those done, so I'll have plenty of time to properly think it through. The idea of getting my nipples pierced was a recent one so I'm not going to just go out and do it. I've been wanting my tongue pierced for about a year and a half or two years now. I'm excited!

Yeah, nipple/genital piercings are probably a bit risque done on underagish people...

But definitely post pics when you eventually get them done, if Squiddy don't mind. Heck, just braless with a t-shirt is fine too.

I got a helix piercing (upper cartilege of the ear) on July 3rd. A lot of people who get a lot of piercings say that it is the most painful piercing you can get.

Apparently, a lot of people are either liars or pussies.

The best advice I can give is that cleanliness is next to godliness. At my old high school they had a newspaper clipping in the nurse's office about a girl who got her tongue pierced, it got infected, she ignored it; the infection got into the blood and then it killed her. I thought it was a stupid thing to put on the wall considering they were just trying to scare people out of getting piercings (there was even a big arrow above it explaining that you shouldn't get your tongue pierced). It's not a school's job to monitor their students' choices of body modification. It'd be like your office having a big bulletien board with articles about why you should get your tubes tied.

Anyway, I went off on a tangent there. Just make sure you follow all the directions to a T. or a t. whichever is more accurate.

I found it useful to sleep with my head flat on the mattress (i.e. no pillow) because over-night your tongue swells due to dehydration, and more importantly because of you body working just that little bit extra to get the blood up to your head. Sounds silly I know, but it makes a huge difference during those first days of swollen dribbliness.

You can also get wonderfully colourful resin balls for your barbell, which your dentist will thank you for.

Also, just a bit of social advice, during the first few months you will probably feel the urge to continuously play with it around you lips and clacking it against your teeth and whatnot - try to restrain yourself, lest your mates punch you

Apart from that, keep it clean, gargle after anything passes your lips, and wait just a little longer than you think is necessary until you "use" it with another person, because tongue tearing, blood drooling, cotton-mouthed sex is not usually a turn on

Hydrogen peroxide
It tastes nasty but it keeps things clean and as for protecting your teeth I've heard of covers you can get for the balls to keep damange to the teeth at a minimum.

haha, just be sure its over the counter hydrogen peroxide. Severe chemical burns are bad!

also, I've found that the tongue piercing is not all its cracked up to be for the whole oral sex thing. In a way it helps, but it also limits you. occasionally, if I went bottom to top across the hood/clit, it would sometimes get hooked under the hood and cause what I understand to be great discomfort. but then again, i doubt you'll be performing cunniligus (sp?) on yourself, so I guess its not your problem

Don't know, I've heard some say it makes oral better, and some say it makes it worse [and others say it outright ruins it completely]. Personally think it gets in the way, and has just enough potential to cause damage as to make it not worth getting. If you're getting it for the oral sex, that is.

If you're getting it for cosmetic reasons, then of course that doesn't apply, and if you're going down on someone who prefers no extra bits in your mouth, can always just take it out for however long it takes.

Had nipples done, but they apperently don't look very 'professional' if you can see the outline through a shirt at work. They healed up, but were plenty of fun while they were there [have to be careful though, nipples aren't made of metal, and you have to be sure not to rip anything]. Can only wear them around people you trust though, because it's really not hard to damage them, so if you're planning on a couple 1-night-stands, be prepared to take them out

Likely will get those done again some day, but they've healed over

About the oral sex thing I was thinking more about performing it on Squiddy. and he's all for it. I've heard from a friend that it makes oral sex for guys worse, but I've also heard it makes it better. It's just one of those things where it depends on the person. Either way if he doesn't like it I can take it out. I was also thinking about getting one of those barbells with the vibrating thingy on it to make it more fun. I need to look it up though so I know where to get it. I also want a flashing one for raves.

I know at the jewlery kiosks in the mall (in the states) they sell the vibrating barbells, also at a shop called Spencers (one of those stores that caters to the 20 something age bracket with those wonderfully tasteless gifts) and in your run of the mill sex shop.

just something to keep in mind... I was dating a guy who got one of his nipples pierced and later took it out - His nipple got stretched horizontally from the barbell going through it, and after taking it out, it stayed like that, so now he has one warped nipple.
