A sure sign of when a cartoon jumps the shark is when they start making "celebrity guest-star" episodes. Like when Scooby-Doo and the Harlem Globetrotters solved mysteries together.
I fear we're about to see a steady decline in Grumpy popularity, punctuated by a desperate attempt to rekindle interest through several spin-off comics, including the adventures of Grumpy as a young hamster.

But then I'd have to maintain it too!

As I recall, that was a whole series of its own.Snackbot wrote:A sure sign of when a cartoon jumps the shark is when they start making "celebrity guest-star" episodes. Like when Scooby-Doo and the Harlem Globetrotters solved mysteries together.
Batman was probably the weirdest that I know of personally...
though Sonny and Cher, the Harlem Globetrotters, and the Addams Family come pretty close.
And not one of them ever took issue with the fact that Scooby could talk.
Ever.

Yeah, but Cher is an alien, the Harlem Globtrotters fought crime using basketballs, and half the Addams Family is essentially the Living Dead. A talking dog is pretty much on par in this group...ManyWorlds wrote:As I recall, that was a whole series of its own.Snackbot wrote:A sure sign of when a cartoon jumps the shark is when they start making "celebrity guest-star" episodes. Was that the one with the guy who had a basketball for a head, and another one could pull anything he wanted out of his giant afro?KittyKatBlack wrote:At least they didn't use the Globetrotters from the actual SHOW about the Harlem Globetrotters. You know, the ones where they actually became superheros and had super powers.

Actually, there were two Harlem Globetrotters cartoons. The one you mentioned was the later of the two. I remember enjoying the earlier one which was much more "mundane" and a lot more fun, even for the kid me. (OTOH, I loved the original "Spider-man" cartoon which I have recently seen again to learn that it was truly awful while Underdog was a blast as a kid and is still fun to watch so those childhood memories are horribly unreliable.)KittyKatBlack wrote:At least they didn't use the Globetrotters from the actual SHOW about the Harlem Globetrotters. Yes, but now, you can go back to Classic Grumpy, and old fans of the series will have a newfound appreciation for the original style. I smell a fantastic comeback!mcDuffies wrote:You ruin Grumpy!
