How often does your style shift?

Post by Killbert-Robby »

I was just wondering how often your style changes? This can be from a full artistic over haul to a change in character design.

I find myself always changing characters slighly, because alot of it is based on real life, and my characters are personal friends, so I'm always keeping up to date with how they look at that point in time. Like my hair has steadily been growing longer, and I've let the 'tace come up to say hello. So boom, my character reflects that. Any my costar, Allan, just went skin head.

How/How often do you guys(gals) change style or character design?

I have intentionally made small changes at the start of every chapter. But my art is progressing as part of the story's plot, so I'm not the best measure.

Unintentional changes? I'm sure I've made a lot. I didn't think so for a long time, but my art really has improved in the past year.

Gradually. Though I cut back on hatching at the beginning of this current story to focus on the actual act of drawing instead.

I believe mine does occasionally but then again, I'm still getting used to drawing my characters.

I like to use slightly different style for every new project.
"mcDuffies" style was very similar to what we most often see in adventure webcomics, animation-influenced stylisation. I think people compared it to "It's Walky" the most.
For "LWK" I use very stylised style, mostly keeping all figures geometrical.
For "Accomplished person", I tried something of a realistic style that I've been trying to work on for a while. That comic is the first time I was satisfied with it.
For forum comics I use very sketchy style that's apparently been influenced by Pedro Aragones.

I like to proud myself by the thought that they're all reckognizable as mine, that is, that even if I shift the style, you can still see that it's my drawing.

I don't try to shift my style around a lot as far as my comic goes. I'll make minor changes, and a lot of the time the style changes for certain characters simply because it's been weeks or months since I've drawn the character last.

I will, however, try and make a conscious change in style when I'm drawing fanart or doodling something new. Sometimes I like to try and emulate the style of the person I'm drawing fanart for. And sometimes I'll just try their character in my style.

I've been drawing for years and years...my art style was pretty well established by the time I started my comic.

It has improved as the comic has progressed and the character designs have become more refined and standardized...but the overall style is still basically the same and recognizable.

If there's one character who's changed the most it's the monkey Shandy...while with most other characters I find a look I like pretty fast and then stick to it and refine it a bit, I'm always tinkering with Shandy.

it seems to stay sort of the same, little things change...noses and eyes mainly...sometimes crhis' head is too big :( and that makes him look like a kid. the worst shift is page 7 of chapter one...it looks like someone else drew it :o

Constantly changing. Mostly small changes, like the number of shades of black I use in a shadow or something.

I've been messing around with different wierd little techniques, too, just for fun. I did a strip that looked like courtroom drawings, and I did some panels a few strips ago all in black, white and gray, like they were cut out of paper or somesuch.

I make little changes here and there all the time, really . . . but major plateaus where I suddenly upshift into a newer, better way of drawing occur every few months or so, it seems.

Most of my style changes are unconscious things, where my comic is concerned.

Outside my comic, though, I make a conscious effort to try out new styles with every drawing. What those styles are tend to depend on my mood. It's almost always at least a little manga-influenced, though, and I'm trying to remedy that.
This is going in my notebook titled "Things I Didn't Know about Surface Dwellers."

I make little changes here and there every few strips. I like to keep attempting to evolve my art. Improve, or what have you.

My style doesn't shift.

It evolves.
