How do you draw angel wings?

Post by DancingChaos »

Well, I know how to draw them, I just want them to look absolutely gorgeous... and the way I draw my wings... well... they're not pretty, hehe...

Uh, I don't really wanna show you how I draw angel wings... But I will only show you if you insist ^^

So, please give some tips for me...

No piccies? Darn. Image

I'd suggest that you Google Image Search "Angel wings," if you want the really beautiful stuff. There are some good sources that way. The problem with wings is that everyone draws them in different ways. You have to find your own way.

I actually love drawing angels/demons. If you're interested, I could send you a sample of something I drew, I'd be more than happy to help.

if you showed us some of your attempts, we might be able to better direct you to a style that you'll like. as sparrow said, there are many ways to draw wings.

anyway, i would start out by looking at pics. of birds.

That is an excellent shot of a wing! *saves* :D

If you want to know how to draw wings, look at the way other people have done it. Humans do not naturally have wings so you have to fake the way they connect.

Mm... Escaflowne.

Some to think of it, anime and manga is usually a good source for wings, too.

Wow! That's a beautiful picture!!! Everything is perfect, except the rotting corpse! But your eyes are mostly taken to the wings ^^ Thank you!!!

Okay, since you guys wanted to see my angel piccies, I guess I can't refuse ^^

Uh, okay... These are kind of old, so it is pretty disproportionate... Please don't look at that and look at the wings ^^

I drew this one right after my 14th birthday:

the first one is magnificent.

i love the way you can really see the 'fuzzyness' of the wings. the feel alive, like they're actually part of the character. the second set don't really convey that same thing... especially with the feather outline.

i also thought of this to show you. even though there's only one wing, it shows how they can move

I'm a bit weirded out by the second one, since the feather sizes/thicknesses between the outside and the inside parts don't match. I'm not saying that size for all feathers are uniform on a wing - just that the differences should be smaller.

I like the first one a lot, though. The wings look more 'alive'. :)

(Addendum: Oh my god the first one reminds me of L from Death Note! So cwuute. :3 )

Thank you!!! I put many hours into that one... ^^ Yeah, I didn't really like how I did the second one...

Wow, I think that's a great picture!!! I like how the wing is in a different position instead of the same old place ^^
Thanks for the comment!!!

Angel wings... everyone does them differently, from thousands of feathers, to a more realistic few.

Drawn from a statue

Somewhat based from a Spawn cover

Pulled from my head

Reffing from pics of birds is a good way to get started. Better yet, find some bat pics, to get a good idea on how to frame things, since you can sometimes lose heart with the thousands of feathers in the way. An interesting thing about wings is that they have like 7 main feathers that enable them to fly, while the rest are for decoration. If you don't clip the two outside feathers (the biggest ones), even if you get rid of the others, a bird can still fly -- or glide like a dart. Eliminating those two feathers, however will pretty much ground a bird. It's like cutting off your big toes. Without them, you cannot stand for very long.

Here's an interesting tutorial about several types of angel wings. I found it off a tutorial list linked at Kung Fool. I hope this helps.

I would definately suggest using actual animal reference vs other art work. If you use another's art your just replicating style, and youre not really learning much. But if you look at actual animals, like the eagle youll get an idea about the anatomy of the wings, teaching you something new. After you sketch the actual bird's wings you ll look down and be surprized at the new accurate detail, and it will turn heads!

Whenever I have trouble drawing something, I mean ANYTHING, from umbrellas to houses I always use a reference picture.

Hope this helps ^-^

Since 2 of my characters have angel wings, I just thought I'd comment. Basically referance pics of birds is the way to go, though I also recommend looking at pictures of people swimming if you're going to draw them on somebody flying. Here's how I've used them, more or less. For a rogue fallen angel I made them rot -
Image
For a demon who earned his wings I made them slip-ons -
Image
And occassionally when he's flying I don't even actually draw the wings, just make a glow -

ONE FEATHER AT A TIME! :o

This thing has to be at least 6 years old, but I haven't drawn any angels since.

I'm guessing my strategy is the reason... so don't listen to me.

I agree with just about everyone else, LOTS of reference pictures

Hale, your wings look a little too busy, I think the main reason is because all the feathers are the same size, vary the sizes of the feathers

meanwhile here's a piece I did for a friend, this is their D&D character
