For those missing Goobla's --> IRC <-- applet...

I've made a new applet for those too lazy or on a computer without an IRC program on it. Access #keenspace today!

Ok, I confess, I'm a total newb and don't know squat about IRC. Could someone explain it to me in the same terms you would a toddler? I'm not sure how to use it...

A toddler? Sure.

"Honey, this wouldn't be fun for you, it's just grown-ups talking about stuff. There's no games on it at all. Here, let me get your "Counting my Numbers!" game going for you..."

::edit:: stickying this because people ask about an irc client all the time.

Haha... right, I suppose I should be more careful with my wording in the future.

Hm.... now I've managed to stop being the property of TM, but nothing I type shows up. *scratches chin*

Getting on IRC . . .

That all depends what client you're using. Popular ones include mIRC, Chatzilla (a Firefox browser plugin) and Trillian (for those who also instant message). Once you have a client installed and running, enter into the text field "/server irc.esper.net" and press enter. Once connected, you'll want to give yourself a username ("/nick Lei") and join the channel ("/join #keenspace"). After that, you're set. :)

Or, you could skip all that and use the java client Teammayhem set up. :P

But using a client on your computer allows you to log the chat, something I've found useful when I've forgotten about a particular event and need a refresher. ;)

I've tried using the java client, but right now almost nothing I type will show up, which is very irritating... :-? I've looked at a few IRC clients, but most of them looked to cost something, or are Mac-incompatible.

Mac Chat!

Post by Fading Aura »

A quick Google search brought up Colloquy, but, since I don't use a Mac, I'm afraid I can't say if it's worth going for or not. You might want to PM cjburgandy. She uses a Mac and has experience in looking for a client, if I recall correctly. ;)

xchat

I have a mac, but I don't chat on it, I chat on my linux box. but for Mac, XChat is what I suggest. I liked Snak, but I didn't want to pay for it. Colloquy I really hated.

Colloquy is nice and easy, but it doesnt keep a full log of the chat as you go along.

I started with colloquy but for some reason it stopped working completly so I switched to Xchat, which is good, but you need a better handle on how to set up the connection to the room.

I'd recommend starting wth colloquy if you dont know how to work IRC at all.
