being handicapped will certainly bag you some issues that go beyond simple body image problems. Problem is, most psychiatrists try and and simply brainwash you into being satisfied with the body you're stuck with. You're supposed to just "accept" your limitations, as if they were something trivial like hair color. It's perhaps not healthy to loathe one's own body, but neither is it a great thing for one's mental health to be told one should love a broken-down collection of non-working parts. When you have to fight your own body just to do basic daily living tasks, it's hard not to feel a certain amount of alienation from it.
I'm waiting for full-body replacement, vis Ghost in the Shell. The only problem is that right now, even in my current decrepit state, there are things I can do that can't be duplicated by machine or machine interface. Medicine has improved enough in the last 15 years or so that my body is sustainable. That means I have time to wait for prosthetics to improve.

Hear hear; welcome to the club.Schol-R-LEA;2 wrote:...For now, I think it's safe to say the the only sort of 'trans' I am is transhumanist...
That's a list I'd like to see...Honor wrote: In the realm of gender and sexuality, our idiosyncratically human need to put things into two or three neat categories has left us with some deeply flawed thoughts and views for a very long time now... There aren't two neat categories of gender, but rather at least fifteen I can think of off the top of my head. Not two sexualities, but at least six. ...And, to be honest, I think those are probably even artificially narrow categorizations we would eventually have to be disabused of.
(I just wonder how it compares to my system, which is basically an n-dimensional space, with points representing 'orientations' if you will. I haven't quite figured out what n is; somewhere between 3 and 9. Unfortunately, in attempting to enumerate them, I risk improperly folding separate dimensions into one.
There ya go: The conversation has gone from surgeries to sexuality to... General Relativity! Hah!)
And of course, culture plays a big part, too. (More and more, I think cultures are more influential than anyone gives credit for; cultures provide mental filters, which affect perceptions, and my current operationg theory basically says, "When you get right down to it, perception is just about all that really matters.")
On the one hand, I have some idea of what I think my own perclavities are; but then I must ask, "Is this really me? Is it a culturally mandated memeplex pretending to be me? Is it good for me to be this, or to be a memeplex pretending to be this? Is it a culturally-imposed memeplex that is telling me its good or bad to be this? fractal ad infinitum" Actually, this probably won't make much sense unless I spell out quite a lot about my (current perceptions) of myself, which, at this time, I am neither comfortable nor non-tired enough to attempt.
Maybe tomorrow; who knows?
(Right now, I must sleep.. I bought MS Flight Simulator today, got stuck at the 4th training flight, and am still trying to do level, low speed flight, in my head, while simultaneously trying to figure out the trim controls. All this despite not actually playing it at this time. It's kinda disconcerting.)

*snuggles Linda* sorry i wasn't here right after your surgery! I wanna say congrats on the first surgical step!
i feel special because i already know a good deal about the processes of the diff surgeries... the way they are right now make it not too bad for girls to get their girly bits! I mean, it's a good deal of time, money, and recovery, but it's definitely worth it, as you'll have a mostly functioning vagina and clit. One thing is that the vagina won't deepen as much as one that was there at birth, but it doesn't present too much of a problem as long as there's not lots of deep penetration. The clit will get you more saensation anyway.
Anyway, good luck and best wishes!
