It would be kind of interesting to see how many Family Circus strips could be captioned with lines taken from GGC to improve them.

Looking... I can't think of a GGC quote to go with it right off hand, but I'm faily sure this is Kwerki as a child.

Looking through the 60's cartoons there, I discover that, before I was old enough to read it, the Family Circus was actually funny... Like the dad getting boozed up while he too the kids to a ballgmae...
"We cross our bridges when we come to them and burn them behind us, with nothing to show for our progress except a memory of the smell of smoke, and a presumption that once our eyes watered...."

Although the one where he tell's Billy "Your skin's so soft... like a girl's." is pretty damned creepy.

Actually, the captions for The Farside were frequently swithced around with other comics, like Dennis the Menace. One was really funny:

A bunch of snakes are sitting around a table.

caption: "Hamsters again?!?"

Dennis says to his buddy while both are eating a sandwhich.

something like: "It sure is great mom knows how to make peanut butter and jelly"

Both were quite funny with mixed up captions.

There was a wonderful site called Dysfunctional Family Circus that posted FC cartoons, and the visitors to the site would add their own captions. Of course the captions were of the most horrible variety.. Dolly was a lesbian, the father was molesting all of the kids, the kids were molesting eachother.. hilarious family entertainment.

There are still archives of the content, if you're interested. They make a good read.

Didn't MAD magazine have something called 'The Family Ruckus'?

Don't know about that title but, I remember leafing through the issue in a supermarket as a youngin. I believe it was still called the Dysfunctional Family Circus as well.

The panels that I remember

(scene: a 1 pt perspective shot of a small pathway between rooms. Blood is splattered all over the floor in the room that is behind. Dolly has run out to the room in front looking very concerned and shouting)
Dolly: MA! BILLY FOUND THE FAMILY GUN!

(scene: pretty much the same except no blood. Dolly and Jeffy are talking. The mother is lying back on the floor with a look of amusement. Shoulders and above are visible and nekkid. A hairy guy who kind of looks like a young Burt Reynolds is on top)
Dolly: See! It's just like on TV

(scene: The mother is sitting on a recliner with a smoke in her hand looking at a card. Jeffy sits next to her hands folded in anticipation)
Mother: You made this? It sucks.

The best of those confussions was when the Far Side had a cartoon of a Neanderthal going to a plam reader. But the text instead was put under Denis the Menace. So the final result was the kid saying to his mother "I see your fussilized skull on a glass cage in a museum of the future"

A coworker had a great Family Circus spoof in his cube some years back. A couple people were hiding in the bushes outside the FC home peering in the window. Inside the family was sitting down to dinner. Mommy was delivering a roast to the table. There at the head of the table was Old Nick himself.

One of the voyeurs said "That explains why they always look the same and never get any older!"
"It is the difference between the unknown and the unknowable, between science and fantasy - it is a matter of essence. The four points of the compass be logic, knowledge, wisdom and the unknown. Some do bow in that final direction. Others advance upon it. To bow before the one is to lose sight of the three. I may submit to the unknown, but never to the unknowable. The man who bows in that final direction is either a saint or a fool. I have no use for either."

By "Old Nick" he means "Nickademus" (Satan) not "Jolly Old St. Nick" (Santa).

I've got (AFAIK) a full archive of Spinnewebe's version of Dysfunctional Family Circus, and online versions pop up from time to time, like this one or this slightly different one (I can't guarantee that it will still be up when you try to follow the links; for a sample that's likely to remain available, see here). If you like it, I recommend slurping a copy of it yourself.

Spinnwebe's version wasn't the first DFC, but it was by far the longest running version on the net, and IMAO the best. He managed to finish exactly 500 comics - with an average of 150 Green section captions apiece (Green section was the ones which were accepted for the final archive; Spinn would post the not-quite-good-enough ones in the Yellow Zone, and the absolute so-bad-it-funny worst in the Red Zone).

Spinnwebe managed to keep it going for five years before King's Features Syndicate sicced their lawyers on him - not coincidentally, not long after they created their own web site. As explained here, Spinn originally meant to fight them, and all his fans were ready to stand behind him, but after a personal talk with Keane himself, he decided to back down and simply close up shop. The Wikipedia article has a reasonably accurate history of the site, and links to some of the cultural relics left behind, such as It's the Cat's Ass!" , The DysFAQ, and Horselover Fat's Inside Guide to the DFC. HlF's own history of the site can be seen here, as well.

On such a site you know that it only takes so long until you run into a tentacle monster somewhere.
