Dragonaur Mythologies

Long ago, on a different forum, "Radioactive-Newt" once posed these questions for me. I'm re-posting them here...

Questions:

1) Does Zara like gold because she can buy things with it, or is it just a dragon hording type mentality?

2) Xara has been often been called/calls herself a Saurian. Is this what the race name for dragons are, or something more specific?

3) Is there something we can call the artist Dragonaur other than "Dragonaur" because comic Dragonaur and artist Dragonaur are very confusing to use in the same sentence?

Answers:

As for the questions, I'll start last first:

3) I go by "Sean Johnson". I have my name sprinkled around here and there but I guess not at all here on the forums! (Check my Deviant Art pages http://dragonaur.deviantart.com)

1) Xara has the classic hording instinct. As a matter of fact Xara believes if she can hord enough she can become a star faring dragon. Xara does not like spending for anything. Up to now, I just assumed that she was bullying and stealing to make her way. This will probably cause her problems when she heads into town with the family!

2) I've been a bit confusing on this issue. Using "saurian" and "dragoness" interchangingly. Here's my take: I'm borrowing a little bit of "Gold Digger" universe. Saurians were a reptilian race that existed millions of years ago. In "Dragonaur", they existed on Anterra as the first sentient beings and advanced civilization. Their first experiments in genetic engineering created Dinosaurs which were released on earth.

While highly intelligent, Saurians were not well developed emotionally and were at constant war amoung themselves. In time they created the super warriors: the Dragons. Being extremely powerful and intelligent it was only a matter of time before they sucked most the magic from Anterra, destroyed it and most of themselves. The remainder scattered across the universe.

This is why we see dragons on earth from time to time. In the following millenea different races of dragons evolved.

Xara is a dragoness. Tho' she is not fully aware of this. The Anterrain dragons are solitary. However, they do feel the drive to procreate from time to time. They will endure each other long enough to conceive children. Of course, this can also be a problem since raising children is a time consuming process for any sentient race. So Xara's mother had a different plan.

Just what exactly happened between Laurence's family and Xara's mother will be told in the future. But as it turned out Xara's mother ended up having to raise Xara by herself in the end. Since Xara herself might grow to become a threat to her mother, Xara's mother wanted to teach Xara only enough magic so that at some point Xara could fend for herself but no more. Unfortunately, being half elven, Xara has trouble summoning and controlling even basic draconic magic. This was a constant frustration for her mother who wanted to be rid of the child as soon as possible yet teach her no more then necessary!

As it was, Xara ran away at 13 and now does her best to avoid her mother. Given her family troubles, its no surprise that Xara did her best to avoid Laurence's peace overtures upon his return to Anterra. But Xara was flirting with the evil Lord Arai and that was a dangerous situation and so Laurence and Triona set into motion their plan to reel in Xara. Which brings us to our present story!

As you can see this is an old set of questions. Many of these issues have been answered in "Chapter 2" of the comic. Xara has softened up considerably in the intervening years. She's more trusting and alot more friendly. In addition, I have been thinking more about the physics of the magic on the world of Anterra and I'll add that to this thread eventually.

Here's a partial list. I'll add to this and tweak it as I think this over more...

Height: 5'9"
B/W/H: 40-23-39
Likes: Carla, gold and shiny things, warmth.
Dislikes: fighting, thieves, most technology, cold.
Powers: Undeveloped here. Xara figured out some simple fire blasting spells. Able to discern the truth. She can fly.
Pros: Quick bursts of speed and power. Heat sensitive vision. Intelligent and quick learner.
Cons: Low stamina. Affected by cold weather. Beginning magic user.

I didn't realize that Xara was quite so tall. Of course, it kind of makes sense, since she is a dragon and all. She's 2 inches taller than good ole' Veronika. Veronika being 5 foot 7 inches tall, probably 5'9-10" in heels.

Y'know, with her likes of gold and shiny things, I'm a bit surprised that she hasn't gone back to see if her hoard was still wherever it is. Granted, she really hasn't had the opportunity to do so, but it must be driving her bonkers! "My gold, my gold, it better ALL still be there!" <(>_<)>

Makes sense that she would like the warmth and dislike the cold. Is this because she is cold-blooded or because she has an affinity towards fire?

Anyway, thanks for the info! We'll see where it leads into the war of... "Dragons versus Succubi"!

I definitely struggled with her height. I didn't want her to be too short because of her dragon heritage. Of course, from her Father's side she definitely should be shorter! It was toss up between 5' 8" and 5' 9".

All her gold was stolen when she lost her battle with her grandmother, Triona. I've never really mentioned her previous treasure but while she was unable to guard her horde it was likely lost by pillagers. But at that juncture in her life it wasn't much of a stash yet anyway. Xara's power has always been limited for some strange reason. But that's a good idea. Perhaps she should go back just to verify her worse expectations.

Xara is semi-cold blooded. She has trouble regulating her body heat. So she needs to get out of the sun when too hot and get back under the sun when too cold. But she prefers it hot and can stand a lot of heat. However, she does seem to have a problem with fire. In her last battle the flame she threw bothered her throat! She's begining to wonder about that.

Another question just popped into my mind as I looked over the last few pages of your comic.

I'm not sure if you will cover my question in the future and I hope I'm not getting at some sort of spoiler or something, but my question is...

What is Arai?

Obviously, he looks human, but his skin color says otherwise. We, the readers, already know what most of the characters are...but Arai...is still an enigma on so many levels.

That's a most excellent question.

I've never properly given him motivations in the story. Other than trying to attain "power and control." He was an apprentice who went wrong. I never really decided if he was Laurence's apprentice or somebody else. He was after Xara from the beginning. But it wasn't until last year that I really gave him a plan of using Xara so that the demon Rhea could possess her.

Seven years ago, I had originally intended him to cast a spell on Xara so he could control her and attack Laurence's kingdom. Then Carla, Kyle, Laurence, and Triona would have the difficult problem of how to rescue her. But very quickly into the story Xara was injured by a "Jaggar," a sort of spirit sucking, ghost dragon controlled by Triona who was attempting to capture Xara before she was captured by Arai! So instead of being an uber powerful dragoness in my story, it turns out Xara has no particularily strong inate ability for magic, for some reason... And as the story unfolded, it turned out that Laurence has no kingdom, since it was previously brought down by Xara's mother!

The first 4 years of my story I was just trying to get used to cartooning! Later, I felt I started to get a grip on layouts. But it was clear I was having a serious story telling problem. I decided I needed to quicken the pace and tie some things together. Thus, Rhea was created. She was the event that drove a permanent wedge between Xara and Kyle. Even now I really haven't given Rhea many particular motivations either! But as far as Laurence and Triona are concerned I don't suppose it matters, since they must rescue Xara anyway.

So that's the best I can do for the moment. ^_^;
