Mus will be glad to make available to you a wide variety of garum, from the light and tangy to the thick and bizarre, and also many Kosher varieties available. Apparently there was a big need for suppliers of specialised garum in the Empire--because who knows what ended up in those vats at your run-of-the-mill fish-pickle factory?

Everything I know about garum I learned from Boris Johnson's The Dream of Rome. And doesn't he make it sound appetizing.

Anyway, I've read SPQR Blues and your other stuff over the last couple of days, and may I say Bravo! As a cartoonist, ancient history geek and Donna Barr fan this is right up my street. Likeable characters, nicely drawn, and the Year of Four Emperors. Fantastic. I dug that little "Quid est Valentine's Day?"/"Nescio" exchange on Daily Angst as well.

My new job (I just started this week) has knocked the stuffing out of the SPQR Blues schedule. So many images are swirling around in my head searching for a way out and onto a page, I know they're going to burst out and draw themselves sooner or later if I don't get moving. Please keep checking the site--it won't be too much longer before there's an update ::knock on a wooden barrel of garum::

Hello -- it's two hours til lunchtime yet, so I keep that saussage roll for later --
I've said how I stumbled upon SPQRBlues in that topic "Love the comic" (must have been that keyword "love").
I nearly spent three hours yesterday catching up on the current storyline. I'm really amazed. That's an enormous project and I wish you all possible luck and support of the good fortunes around.

As to introduce myself, I'm old (41), art director in an internet agency, and so mad about Romanitas that I've painted the walls of my toilet in 3rd pompeian style. My avatar, however, resembles myself a bit (when I was younger) - that picture struck me dead in an exhibition about Pompeji some six years ago, and re-triggered that Rome-craziness I had when I was a kid.

Thank you! And welcome. I am in the middle of some scary dentistry (I leave for my next appointment in about 15 minutes), but once I get past this, the rest of the current chapter is sitting anxiously in my head waiting to get out.

Mine is Pompeiian red with framed 3rd-style paintings. We should post photos! My living room is a 3rd-style work in progress, and I've repeatedly threatened to paint a friend's computer room, too. If I could, I'd happily turn an entire house into a miniature Herculaneum with appropriate furniture. (My wild dream is to own enough property to build a home that looks a little Roman street with shopfronts, apartments, and a modest mansion at the end... sans volcano, I should think. I'm just so much better suited for Roman architecture.)

Isn't it weird how these things happen? Over and over as I look at archaeological artifacts I find things that are in just the right place for the comic's storyline.

About the findings that "fit right in": that's what struck me about SPQRBlues, it feels right. It's obvious you love the characters. And the era. And all. Love shows.

Salvete omnes! I am Alex, and I found this via those nifty little Project Wonderful links. I spent much time that I should have spent doing homework (i.e. translating the Aeneid for my Latin class -_-) But anyhoo, I'm a Classics Education major, so when I saw something called "SPQR Blues" I had to check it out.

On a side note, it's kinda depressing that this forum has been abandoned thus.

And as for the sausage roll, I'll take that. And, what the hell, tell Mus I'll try some of his garum!

The conversation mostly happens on http://meritahut.livejournal.com--sometimes a little bit of chit chat, sometimes a lot. It helps that so many people have lj accounts or can just post anonymously, and can comment on a specific day's comics.

I was thinking about pushing conversation back over here, or maybe starting a separate forum on spqrblues.com, but I think folks are pretty happy on lj. For the time being, anyway!

Today's comic is ready but will have to wait for the wee hours to be posted, as I will be out late tonight, no doubt getting crazy in some pub on the Decumanus Maximus.
