The thread of Funny

A place for myself to post the comics storyline in prose form, plus a current comic discussion and most likely some random threads.

But...but...they DO float!!!

Edit: Ha! That Calvin and Hobbes link had my favorite one! (The one where they're playing doctor)

People have been known to believe many stupid things. The most commonly talked about is the world being flat, of course...I'm sure that there are things we believe now that in years to come, people will talk about in that same tone.

That was exactly what I was thinking of. "Build a bridge out of her!"

I know that just too well.
But seriously, did they believe witches are made out of wood?

Yeah, like homeopathy, acupuncture and stuff like that.

People belived that witches floated in water because most Puritans couldn't swim at the time. Wood floats on water, also. If you floated, you were a witch and had to be burnt. (Wood again.) If you sunk, you weren't a witch and too bad for you!

Yeah, I know, but did they literally believe that witches are made out of wood?

Edit: Something I just stumbled upon:

Not quite, it’s "bizcocho," but why are you talking about sponge cakes?

Okay, here is another word you can remember: "Biskuit."
It’s the German word for "sponge cake."

Well, today in Spanish we were working on translating some legends with small groups. Part of the story said something about thanking the Virgin Mary for the good harvest or something. The kid said something about how Catholics have some weird thing about worshipping Mary. Naturally, I got pretty cheesed. I told him to not say that sort of thing about Catholics, especially during Lent. By now in my life, I've gotten kind of tired of the poorly-educated Christian Reformed in the area. I tried to teach the guy why Catholics say the Hail Mary but surprise, surprise, he didn't listen to me.

I've found that in some cases agnostics and atheists can be more open-minded than Protostant Christians on the subject of Catholicism. One should not talk about a religion they don't understand as critically as the kid in Spanish today.
