Of hiragana and katakana there are roughly 95, not counting doubles or derivitives, but including about 4 or so ones that aren't commonly used. Kana are basically charecters based on kanji (chinese charecters) that either look somewhat like them (hiragana) or are just a portion of them, like two or three strokes (katakana). Hiragana are the simple curvy ones used for japanese words, and katakana are the ones made of straight stokes for any words not orgionally japanese. You'd need about 2000 kanji to read a newspaper, this is not including the 90 or so commonly used kana. Class dismissed! ^.^

Actually there are 46 each in Katakana and Hiragana.. (: Then there's the B's and P's which are just H sounds with a little symbol above it, and the Doubles like Shi.
