Of course it could be worse, you could insist that Akira Toriyama is God. Oh wait, I do that! Never mind.<P>------------------

I have no idea what any of you are talking about. Except for the stuff about Akira Toriyama. I know that.<P>You know, I have no weaknesses! Except I do have a weakness for one little video game company in particular. It starts with a N and ends with amco.<P>I think the bigwigs at Namco sit in a room and think, "Hmmm...how can we get Cary to buy and/or give favorable reviews to our games? Women? Nah, Sega does that already. I know, let's do this. To get Cary to want Ridge Racer V, let's put Pac-Man in it! For Moto GP, let's put Klonoa in it! Speaking of Klonoa, I think it's time for another sequel. We gotta keep Cary interested in the PS2, you know. And let's get Point Blank 3 out the door, too. Cary's GunCons haven't had much action lately. Now if we could only get him to be interested in Dead to Rights. That'll be the big challenge right there..."<P>And that's what Namco probably says. Eww, I strayed way off course from the subject. Uh...yeah Akira Toriyama rocks. Torneko's Dungeon has clay Toriyama characters. That's really cool.<P>--Klonoa

I'm a Masamune Shirow / Kia Asamiya / Yu Watase guy, myself.
I mostly buy huge artbooks and copy out of them, or attempt to read them..
(ineffective...)
Go Nagai is Satan though.
Not that there's anything wrong with that..
heh.

my ability to draw is very lacking,
but I can 'copy' them.
Not tracing,
I place it next to me and draw the pic.
I've made some cool things,
really.
I made an Evangelion collage by drawing like 15 different faces of Rei.

Good at copying pictures. You'd make a good animator, that's all they do <IMG SRC="

I used to be big into Shirow. I still like him but haven't seen anything new by him in a while... cept Intro Depot 2. Toriyama is a ... demi-god of toilet humor and major ass kicking. <P>Mostly I just like specific character designs and forget names. However I have an available anime shelf so: Tsukasa Kotobuki (<B>Saber Marionettes J</B> and lots more), Masaki Kajishima (the real man behind <B>Tenchi Muyo</B> OVAs), Rui Araizumi (origional illustrator of <B>Slayers</B>) Kenji Goto (<B>Bakuretsu Hunters</B> & <B>Nadesico</B>), and Go Nagai gave me <B>Manzinger Z</B> so I can't bitch on him... though he still draws like he's in the 70s:P <P>------------------

I have mixed feelings on Shirow. I love how he draws his mechs and backgrounds, but I HATE how he draws his characters. His characters always look cluttered and not to clean to me. One thing I must admit about Go Nagai is I love how he draws his character's sideburns. If I could grow sideburns like that, I'd do it!<P>------------------

I hafta say my favorite would hafta be Johji Manabe, although I haven't seen any of his stuff since I was in high school. It was the Dark Horse manga translation of Outlanders and Caravan Kidd that first got me hooked on manga, and ultimately anime. Second in line would be Shirow. I guess his distinctive style is an acquired taste. I personally think his character designs for Orion, Appleseed, and Tank Police kick much arse. To be honest, though, I never really got into Toriyama's stuff. Although distinctive, it just never caught my eye. <P>------------------

I cannot remember for the life of me (Nor can I seem to find my comics of it), but the person who did "Lone wolf and Cub", should have his manga put in the Smithsonian. Not only is the artwork good with nice BELIEVABLE fight scenes (For all you Bird Mountain worshippers out there), but the story was very intriguing.<P>Damond

As the gods of anime would go I would have to say Go Nagai is towards the top but I would have to say as art respect goes I favor his giant robot designs like Mazinger and my personal fav design wise Shin Getter Robo. I would have to throw in just at random another old school mech man and say Mamoru Nagano, who did Five Star Stories is quite legendary. Sides, the neverending flowing hair thing is cool. I'm pretty sure but not positive Takachiho Haruka is the god of Dirty Pair TV so hands down a fav in my book.
Alright.. now for a short rant. I don't buy artbooks in general. Key reason. I can buy the anime on dvd or what not and still frame through and admire it in much larger format and for that matter image quality than average printing. But there are rare exceptions of those who actually have a fabulous style outside of the actual anime. These make up the few that I have in my meager artbook collection. Now, Akira Toriyama is indeed high on the food chain, but how can with this many posts past no one mention Yoshitaka Amano. His works for final fantasy are amazing. Then of course the anime that got several people hooked on it in the first place, Vampire Hunter D. Then you have his amazing artbooks like his most recent, Bitten. I'm sad I missed the Amano exhibit in october. From the virtual tour they had on the web at on amano world it looked fantastic. Oh. And his work with Neil Gaiman on the sandman. Yeah.. there are other people that have longer repetoirs but Amano produces gem after gem. Ahh.. when on earth is the new Vampire Hunter movie going to be released. Oh well. Enough on that.

Okay, my turn to rant a lil'... Amano, I do so love his illustrations. He has an unbelievable skill with line and dark yet colorful patterns. However his character designs are ass. I mean he makes all his heros look like skinny girly pierced pale weak looking poofs! <P> On a side note the official GOD of anime is Osamu Tezuka. <P>------------------
