Well I suppose by now you all have heard the news. And if you haven't, drop what you're doing and go read some video game news site--preferrably a good one. And then come back here. Just as what I and lots of others predicted would happen, Sega will slowly become a third party developer and eventually cease production of their Dreamcast console. This is big news, folks, so I've decided to to a little tribute in honor of Sega's consoles. I'm trying not to focus on my memories of Sega games, cuz we'll still be seing lots and lots of Sega. No need for mourning, people. It's not like Sega's pooping out on us the way SNK did. I think they'll make a fine third party developer. Can't wait to see that Sonic GBA game! Well, here are what I think about what I know about Sega's history.
Arcade:
One of the things I was really worried about in all this was if Sega was going to stop arcade game production, too. Well, it looks like I don't have to worry because it appears they'll continue on with it. Which is good because Sega is one of the best makers of arcade games around--second only to the gods at Namco. What are some of my favorites? Well, even though they're only licensed to Sega by Konami, Frogger and Pengo rock (especially Pengo)! But even Sega could make good games themselves back then, like Zaxxon! Other Sega arcade games I've enjoyed over the years are Space Harriers, After Burner, Virtua Racing, and Crazy Taxi. Has anyone played Planet Harriers yet? What's it like?
Master System:
Sorry Sega, but I will always be a Nintendo supporter. But I do have to admit, the Master System was technically superior to the NES--it's just that the NES had all the good games! The MS was a success overseas, though. My favorite Master System games? Fantasy Zone, Fantasy Zone: The Maze, Transbot (cards!), and um, can't remember any else. Phantasy Star was WAAYYY ahead of its time (just didn't like the dungeons), and even though I never liked the Alex Kidd games as much as everyone else did, they're still cool.
Genesis:
Sega's Magnus Opus, I guess. Too bad that as a young'un, my limited income only allowed me to get only one console. And as a lifetime Nintendo supporter, I got the SNES. I don't care what anyone says, I still think the SNES can do anything the Genesis can do--and better--regardless of processing power. Of course, you can just look at my SNES library and see what games I like: half Mario games and half Square titles.
BUT, it wasn't until emulation came around that I finally saw the light. The Genesis really DID have some cool games! I prefer Mario style platform games over the Sonic ones, but you do have to admit, the old Sonic games were the best that Sega had to offer. Sonic 2 and 3 impressed me especially. Tails rocks! I also discovered that the Phantasy Star sequels could almost hold their own against Square's stuff, and Ristar was pure platform goodness. I already knew this before, but there was one kind of game the Genesis always did better--shooters. Gaiares especially.
Funny thing is, I always found the Sega Scream ads annoying, but I did like it when Sega singed it's logo to me everytime I started a game.
32-X, Sega CD:
Sorry Sega, these sucked. Of course, around this time the Nintendo had the Virtual Boy, so they weren't the only stupid ones. The only reason I'd want a 32-X is for Knuckles Chaotix, and the only two games that amused me on Sega CD were Sonic CD and Wonder Dog!
Nomad:
It was a portable Genesis. I really wanted one, until I saw how it ate batteries!
Pico:
Anyone ever play this? It was for kids. I know it had some kind of Sonic game on it.
Game Gear:
It had some cool games. It was in color and backlit, so it was technically superior to the Game Boy. Lots of neat--and HARD--Sonic games. My friend Cathy has a blue Game Gear, but she won't give it to me. Maybe Mutt will give me his Game Gear and Tails' Adventure. Ha ha! Maybe not!
Saturn:
*collective groan* Well, sorry for you, Sega. I did like how Sega supported 2-D games more than what Sony did. I got a Saturn for 20 bucks with hopes of getting games I wanted. I only got Sonic 3-D Blast. That's all I have for it. I wanted Sonic Jam and Sega Ages, but could never find them. But I really like Sonic 3-D Blast, though. It's one of my favorite Sonic games (aside from Spinball). It's like Flicky meets Marble Madness. Never could figure out what you're supposed to do in Nights, though.
Dreamcast:
This was the system that won back my respect for Sega--a respect that had been lost since Pengo. And no, it's not because certain fictional Sega video game characters supposedly give me candy. ^_^ In a year's time, how many cool Dreamcast games have we seen (the DC has been out for just a little over a year). We've seen LOTS of cool games! When the PS2 has been out for a year, I bet we won't see nearly the amount of cool games that the DC has collected. And you know what? Don't count the DC out yet! They've still got a good year ahead of them with lots of cool games! Phantasy Star Online (well, others think it's cool), Sonic Adventure 2, and 18 Wheeler American Pro Trucker! HONK HONK!!!
Now we shouldn't mourn Sega's future, but I think we should watch them very carefully. Will we get to see the Sega Smash Pack games seperately now, what with the DC price drop and all? As a third party developer, will Sega be able to afford to be the risk-taker they have been in the past? Will we continue to see innovative games that only Sega had the guts to bring over here, like Space Channel 5, Samba de Amigo, and a truck driving game?!? Will they really make it as a third party developer? I think so!
Now it's your turn. I'm not much of a Sega expert, so I probably forgot a few key things. Reply and fill us in! List some of your own Sega past favorites! Speculate on Sega's future! Discuss! But whatever you do, think postive! Sega's not dead yet!
I wonder if Sega is going to rock E3 this year like they did last year?
--Klonoa

alot of sega fans seem very upset about the news of late. imo opinion this is wonderful. now thats easy to say for a diehard nintendo fan but it at least insures sega existance in the future across all consoles? we all know they will do well without the weight of a console so i dont think they are going anywhere soon. so when they become profitable again, who knows? new system? maybe. dc got the shaft this time, its a GOOD system but i think sega's "mistakes" after the genesis caught up with them in the end. people didnt care about dc and or lost trust with sega in general. cause lets face it the "diehard" fans dont keep ur console a float, its the mainstream. so when the mainstream doesnt trust u anymore ur in trouble. anyway thats just my opinion. the future looks good for them and imagining a sega and nintendo teamup is almost historic sega characters in teh next smash bros! sonic vs. mario the fight we have all wanted to fight!
------------------
