Man anime has taken a big dump over the last 10 years.. everything in the last few years has been disgustingly bland with few exceptions. anybody with half a brain (ie: those not so obsessed with anime that "if it's anime it has to be good, expcet hentai because sex is bad") can see..
maybe the new Devilman OVAs can save me (:

For the most part I would have to agree with you Leroy though I must point out that within the last three years we have seen CowBoy Bebop, Trigun, Utena, Excel Saga, The Rayearth OVA's, Card Captor Sakura and a host of other interesting shows. And those are just the more mainstream choices. If you wanna get funky try Super Milk-Chan, DevilMan Lady or Ebi-Chu minds the House. For the most part, I think anime is merely in one of it's transitional lulls. It's had those before, it will have them again. Now, I don't defend all anime... some it sucks big fat Donkey Wanger backwards through a straw but some of it is still highly quality.
------------------

Add Gasaraki to that list Ginga. I just saw the first DVD and it's great. I think a political science major could have a field day with it. Though the way the TAs are delivered into the combat field in episode 4 reminds me of that series.. oh, what's the name again? Oh yeah! Eva!
And I agree, Oruchuban Ebichu is wack. I want to see more of it. ^_^
---------------------------------------------
I really really want to get the last three Cowboy Bebop DVDs... but that would take time away from my precious import Burning Rangers that I bought. Ahhh, how I love Sonic Team. ^_^

So, you see Leroy, there is good anime out there. You just have to wade through the mire of shite to find anything worth watching that ADV hasn't picked up and fudged over. That and we always have Vamp D coming out!
------------------

like a good game, you must look for good anime. I find it funny how like programers, animators think that if they can just throw a bunch of shit together and it will something great. Shit-in-a-pile is still shit.
-Ya"i am not impressed"gami

What about Lain, A Chinese Ghost Story, Fushigi Yugi (if you ignore the sucky dub), Kodomo no Omocha, and Kareshi Kanojo no Jijyo? Some anime sucks royally, but I guess I'm just more optimistic. I like to not think that there's some good out there. There aren't many shows that I've really not liked or not found something to like in them that I've seen, but I know a stinker when I see one.
------------------

Kare Kano! *_* Me love Kare Kano! But last I heard, Leroy haaaates it. n_n Probably because there aren't any lesbians in it, huh leroy? ;D hehe. Admittedly, however, I haven't been very up-to-date on the new anime shtuff. I mean, I only saw Princess Mononoke a month or so ago; and how long has THAT been out! Someone had to bring over Trigun and play it for me, for me to see any of it, but I do likey Lain and Tenshi ni Narumon lots. And Utena be cool too. And sailormoon, even if that's early nineties. Iron Mouse and Palla-Palla rock your world#$*&#. :D But alot of these new series take more than, oh, five minutes to judge if it's coolie or not! Some even reel you in after a few episodes, but I know I was hooked on Kare Kano after the first episode. :D Then when Arima-kun showed up... *_* Mmmmm~...
-nicole :o~~~~~

Yeah.. I think what leroy's trying to say is he's tired of stock stuff. Mentioning anything vaguely shoujo or bishonnen will probably just disgust leroy more in all honesty. Just not his gig and although mahou shoujo is my absolute favorite type of anime I would agree theres been a heck of a lot of shoujo and bishonnen stock anime out in the last few years (fancy la la, touch, to heart, kare kano, etc...) on the bishonen side weiss kreus, slam dunk, and gundam wing all come to mind. All above listed are just examples of what leroy mentioned (though I personally like all the shoujos listed)

I watch a large assortment of animes. Let me see...
Old school: They Were 11 (I'm telling you to watch this movie!! It's awesome!), Blackjack, Ranma 1/2, Lupin, and pretty much anything Miyazaki
New school: Tenchi Muyo! (Has to be #1 in my book! I owe my love affair and addiction to anime to this anime.), Pretty Sammy, Kare-Kano (This show kicks some major ass! You will not laugh at any one anime more than this one!), Comboy Beebop, and Hana Yori Dango
Other faves that I can think of:
El Hazard, Tenshi ni Narumon, Excel Saga, Lain, Trigun, Here is Greenwood, Kodomo no Omocha, Maison Ikkoku (actually, I like the manga only on this one), Card Captor Sakura, Galaxy Fraulein Yuna, Fushigi Yugi, Gunsmith Cats, Dragon Half, Golden Boy, Cutey Honey, Saber Marionette J (J only! Not R, J to X, or the OAVs!!), Bastard, Himiko Den, Haunted Junction, Gundam Wing, Samurai Pizza Cats, Those Who Hunt Elves, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Mamotte Shugogetten, Fancy Lala, Project A-ko, Marmalade Boy (actually, I've kind out-grown this show now ^^; ), Rurouni Kenshin, Photon, Kaitou St. Tail, Nazca, Urusei Yatsura, Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon (subs only, of course), Escaflowne, and.... uh.... that's all I can think of right now.

------------------

Oh yeah, reading Yamcha's post reminded me, Captain Harlock kicks ass. Started watching it recently, and though I tend to hate much of the older stuff, Harlock is just too damn cool. That and Lupin are definitely top notch stuff. ^_^
And a recommendation regarding Outlaw Star. Watch it before watching Trigun or Cowboy Bebop. It's good, but the other two make it look kinda bad by comparison. Maybe the last three episodes will change my opinion, but it just seems kinda... there. Much better than Lost Universe was though. That show could have stood using a little less CG. As in not in every third scene.
And Otaku_Ohki, I'm going to have to call you a lucky bastard now, you lucky bastard.
---------------------------------------------
Has anyone gotten to see Seraphim Call or Angel Links? I'm having a hell of a time finding either. ^_^;

i thought Outlaw Star was much better than Bebop...Then again, it help a lot more that Outlaw Star was nowhere near over hyped as Bebop was.
Ya"the N64 of anime"gami

Yeah well, I don't see anyone mentioning Miyazaki. I mean, come on, the man is a god among animators. Can her do any wrong? I think not. Everything he touches turns to gold! Castle Cagliostro- Best Lupin Film ever bar none, accept no substitutes. Kiki's Delivery Serice- Dude, I laughed, I cried I wanted a cat. Nausicaa- I laughed, I cried and DUDE, it had giant bugs! You CANNOT go wrong with a film that has giant bugs in it. Porco Rosso- Pig in plane 'nuff said. Whispers of the Heart- Anime Romance done RIGHT! Laputa- The Best adventure flick I've ever seen and obviously a big influence on a certain four sided video game company. Mononoka Hime- Environmentalism with teeth, stick that in your ass and smoke it Captain Planet! Ok, some of those are kinda old skool but they all rule! Don't get me wrong, I love Otomo, Gaiax is cool as well but they've all had their little misfires. Miyazaki is just plain King! Bow down before his nipples!
------------------

Wow.. Yagami.. you didn't perchance mean ge ge ge no kitaro in the old school section.. props if you've seen any of it. I'd like to get some but all I can find is the relatively new movie.
Old school.. much like yamcha's: Lupin, Yamato, Harlock, Dirty Pair TV, Macross
New: Tenchi TV (1rst season, not tokyo), Excel Saga, Tenshi Ni Narumon, Trigun, Shin Getter Robo (had to have something mech and getter rocks)
Now I agree with ginga that miyazaki belongs in top fives but when comparing an entire series to one two hour movie the series is usualy going to win so:
5 Favorite Anime Movies: Arivederci Yamato (final yamato), Nausica, Mimi no Sumeseba, Tenchi Muyo in Love, Sailor Moon S
