I'm reminded of two things.
"Go on! Start rue-ing!" from Invader Zim
and
"I shall smite him with my mighty sword!" from The Gamers.

...No, no, no. Joel, you're supposed to threaten to break fingers. And then break fingers. And arms. Stuff like that. Threatening them with bad dialog just doesn't work. Unless maybe they're a rabid english major or thespian.

Ha ha!
Kumoricon, our local anime convention, has an issue with freaking the mundanes.
The teenage attendees love to do it and will go to the mall next door and have lunch in character and play in the park noisily but the board are always nervous about it, like they're embarrassed. I love giving the board a hard time about that, they're such worry warts.

I'm torn on the subject.
On the one hand, geeks should feel free to dress and act how they like. There's nothing wrong with the occaisional geeky outburst.
On the other hand, when a geek dances around like a lunatic with the sole purpose of making "normal" people uncomfortable, screams at the top of their lungs in a quiet room or other anti-social behaviour, it makes me angry because all it accomplishes is giving geeks a bad name. But does that mean all geeks should be ashamed of their geekiness? Of course not!
You see my dilemma.
Darren geeked out, and while loud, it wasn't intended to scare or upset anyone. His outburst isn't anything to be ashamed of. Embarrassed at the volume maybe, but not ashamed.
Victor's antics were malicious, as he fully intended to upset the "normal" people in the park even though he's totally comfortable being "weird" and doesn't really need anyone else's approval to validate his sense of self.
Discuss.

I have similar feelings... but consider, too, that Victor is less a Geek and more a Goth. Goth modes of dress and behaviour are a lot more "deliberately against the grain" than those of most Geeks. That changes the dynamic a bit, since Goths tend to be more persecuted (or at least, FEEL more persecuted) for their appearance, while Geeks are more persecuted for their hobbies and social skills. Result: Geeks are more likely to hide their Geekiness from their persecutors, while Goths are more likely to be rebeliously "in your face" about their lifestyle choices. I wonder if Sociologists study Geek culture? If not, they should. It's fascinating.

I think that's my cue. *Puts on the sociologist hat*
Research on subcultures is an active field in contemporary sociology, which I believe that the participants of these hobbies constitute. I don't have any data available, but I would love to read up on class backgrounds, ethnicity and all the rest.

Monday [Today]: Eeegah!! The Hunter? AGAIN?!
Well, if nothing else I think we can conclusively say that the Hunter IS NOT Joel.

OHNOZ!

The Hunter is totally gonna kill the quiet card-playing geek so hard he'll die from it! You'd think that with the Hunter roaming around geeks would travel in packs for safety!
Hopefully the card-playing geek has powerful Geek-Fu that he can bust out to give the Hunter a thrashing the likes of which hasn't been seen since the last UFC pay-per-view.
