As he rounded the ridge, James kept his rifle up, scanning the area for any danger. It quickly became apparent, though, that this was a thankfully fruitless endeavor. Except for a small, non-threatening lizard and a spiky blue flower, there was no more life on this side of the ridge than there had been on the other side. Less, if you counted the carniphants. The lizard darted into a crevice about fifty feet away at James's approach, and James slowed to a halt.
Lowering his rifle, he searched the horizon, but didn't see anything big and threatening between them and the green zone. Then again, he hadn't seen the lizard either.
Jeez, trapped in a desert having random encounters. Sounds like something straight out of a play-by-post. he thought.
"Sure could use a world map right about now," he muttered. Then, speaking loudly over his shoulder, "Hey, it's clear on this side! Come on around."

(Well, I've been up since yesterday, so I'll see how well - Or sane - I type)
As you round the ridge, you see sand. And rocks. And rocks. And sand. And just to break up the monotony, ridges and cracks. And about fifty feet away, a small, blue, spikey flower.
Which suddenly snaps downward rather fast. You hear a piercing squeal of some small creature, then the flower returns to its previous, innocious position.
With blood on its spikes.

James swallowed hard as he saw the blue flower grab its meal.
Great, he thought. Venus lizard traps. Maybe we should avoid the forest for the trees...
Looking back over his shoulder again, he loudly said "Correction: Make that mostly clear!"
He then saw Joseph coming around the corner. "See that flower over there?" he asked, pointing the blood-stained flower out. "I think it just ate a lizard. Looks like we'll need to keep on our toes out here if we're gonna survive long enough to find a way home."
Because after all, that was the goal, wasn't it? Trolling the desert and sniping lizards was fun and all--yeah, right--but there had to be a way out of this hell.
