Maybe the Hunter has been added into the campaign as a more "realistic" villain? A "Hunter" archetype villain like White Wolf's Men In Black or something?Lunaroki wrote:I'm with Tom on this one. I really don't think that's the Hunter at all. We're just seeing Mark and Sarah in their Shadowrun characters. The guy in black was just a random badguy, not the Hunter. That guy had none of the pizzazz of the Hunter, nor did he monologue about how he was trying to rid the world of geeks.

*shrugs* Eh, maybe, but even if that's the case it's still not the real hunter, for he would never sit down with the group to RP himself hunting geeks when he could be doing it for real.

It certainly seems that way from the new comic!
Who are the Hunters working for?
Have we ment him/her?
And will there be cake?
Okay, forget the cake bit.

theory:
the current story arc isn't based on the shadowrun game of mark and the others. it's the real future, and it really is mark, and it really is the hunter. see, what happened was, mark was in love with this girl. and at one point she was in love with him, too. but then she met someone else. she met the hunter. and for a time all was at peace, although mark had never gotten over the woman. and then one day the woman decided that mark knew too much and wanted to have him killed. so she sent the hunter after him. but mark was clever, and he found a time machine and escaped the hunter by travelling back in time. there was an accident as he travelled, however, and he arrived in our time he suffered severe amnesia. he was taken to a hospital and slowly rehabilitated - although his memory never returned, he found a way to continue on with a normal life.
the hunter searched through time and space looking for a trace of his quarry. one can follow the trail of a time machine but it's not easy. he finally found his prey and realized that he had amnesia. the hunter also realized that any reminders of marks past life would bring back his memory, and then he might be able to escape again. so he began creating a name for himself as a destroyer of geeks, and began using a brian-wave frequency pulse machine thing on mark's brain to urge him towards geekdom. he felt this was the easiest course of action, since most people ignore geeks and think they're totally crazy in the first place. nobody would believe someone would be crazy enough to be obsessed with hunting them. it was the perfect disguise.
except...the next time mark went to hang out with the gamer gang, abbie went off on another, more detailed tangent about shadowrun. the details were so similar to mark's future life that it nudged something in his brain. not much, mind you, but enough that the stopper had been removed and the memories could start flowing again. it was like this constant nagging at the back of his mind, and he couldn't quite put his finger on it, but there was something that he felt like he should know.
the current arc is (if my theory is correct) occuring while mark is asleep. he thinks he is dreaming, but his subconscious is actually relating a completely true story to him. will he realize the truth in time? and if he does...will he give up his new friends and his new geekdom to try to escape again? or will he face the hunter once and for all? and...what will happen with....the woman.....???
of course...this is all just theory ;o)

sorry to be mean, but that read like that one hideously complicated "Harry Potter is really Voldemort and Dumbledore and Snape from the future" monstrously convoluted fanfic I read. I think they're a whole bunch of real-world bad people. It looks like they've captured Sarah and are trying to kidnap Mark, which definitely removes them from the 'friendly LARPer' category. the Hunters are baddies...the question is why, and how can they be defeated?
Jack Chick clone-types would be the obvious thing, which is improbable because it is obvious. Maybe they think geeks are a danger to society because, through various roleplaying games, we escape from reality and that escape is both cowardly and promotes a thought pattern that is unacceptable, according to the Hunters. If they really want people to be very 'grounded in the real world' they might be some type of crazy athiests, Objectivists, or Deists. That'd be cool because not everyone realizes that all philosophies have an equal potential for extremism. I get annoyed when everyone attacks the Christian fundies because it's not like anybody else has less fundies (except for the Unitarians), it's just that the Christian fundies are most noticeable in this country. There are some Orthodox Jews, particularly in Israel, who make Jack Chick look sane and normal, and after 9/11 it's kind of obvious that the Muslims have issues too. You can dig up crazy fundies of every flavor, if you look hard enough. Given that this has been an amusing comic so far, and most people find Deist fundies inherently funnier than Judeo-Christian fundies, that seems highly probable to me. (Mental image: Deist fundie Hunters forcing Mark to memorize the periodic table and learn calculus..."We are indoctrinating you into the love of reason!")

Hey, I consider myself a Christian Fundamentalist. I like those much-ingored fundamentals such as 'Loving thy neighbor' and charity.
Of course, that's not what most people mean by 'fundamentalist', but I don't view the people who are often called 'fundamentalists' 'fundamentalists' anyway, since they seem to love hate and despise reason. (Reason is also mentioned in the Bible as a good thing).

narf: no, i've never written fanfic, because i rarely have time to write these days and when i do i usually try to focus on my songwriting.
luna: sorry for the "spoiler". although i'm 100% certain that my theory was correct, i'm sure that alina, upon realizing that i've somehow stumbled across her exact plotline, will be able to save the day and change it in the nick of time.
khayankh: sorry to be mean but...it was meant as a joke. you didn't pick up on the sarcastic twist i hoped my little story would take. perhaps that's a poor reflection on me as a writer. i meant for it to be as convoluted and silly as possible. i don't ACTUALLY believe in my "hunter" theory. i just thought it would be funny to post the most ridiculous theory EVER, i was hoping it would be reminiscent of a terrible soap opera plot (but aren't they all terrible?). maybe i just didn't pour it on thick enough to be obvious it was a joke? next time...must involve a giant vampire bunny or something...

Yes, for the iner-webz do deprive us of that wonderful thing called tone of voice, unless you can post voice clips.
Unfortunatly, although I have the technology in my laptop, you'd all probably have too hard a time getting through my wierd mix of Bostonian, Californian and Navy to understand that much.
Oh, and I stutter while monolouging.
Now: HowDARE you leave the spolier tags off your theory?
(just kidding, almost obviously)

I figured the hunter was just another LARPer... but in drawing inspiration for his role as the lone hunter, he probably didn't participate in post-Larp coffee-goodness. Or one of the servers in the coffee place could have been the hunter out of costume.
I don't recall the knife-throwing... but how do we know it was a real knife? Could have been fake, or a non-lethal replica.
I think the hunter is another LARPer.
...
Or it's Keyser Soze.

I actually agree with Topher, that's the most credible theory. Who the hell is going to argue with Soze if he decides to hunt weregeeks?

So... whos wearing the white trench?
For some reason, I'm inclined to say Abbie. Of course, that theory relies on us actually seeing an RP and not the REAL future.
