Favorite spells.
My favorite from the wizard list
Lev. 0. Prestidigitation. The ultimate cantrip. Clean, cook, dust corridors to cover your tracks, disguise your odor, makes it awesome.
Lev 1. Mage Armor
Lev 2. Scorching Ray (I use Arcane Study from PH2 and pack metamagic on it) second Rope trick. Never adventure without it.
Lev 3. It's a toss up between dispel magic and fly.
Lev 4. Scrying. I live for scrying. But I like Polymorph for that AC boost.
Lev 5. Wall of Force. For battlefield control. Fabricate, just because.
Lev 6. True Seeing and Dispel Magic, greater. Tons of cool spells.
Lev 7. Teleport Greater, Delayed Blast Fireball, later Reverse Gravity.
Lev 8. Mind Blank, Polymorph Any Object
Lev 9. Time stop, shapechange.

Colour Spray, Wish. High power, both of them.

Prestidigitation and Mage Hand.
In the Forgotten Realms they have Launch Bolt and Launch Item, I really like those two as well.
When it gets to high levels I'm hugely fond of Wall of Force, especially back when the dome version could fit the whole party.

Disintegrate is cheap. It's a 'Yoo dai!' spell.

If they have to pull out disintegrate, probably not that larger than normal.

I have no qualms as a DM pulling out "CR-inappropriate" encounters, but that's only because I like to give the players moments when they clearly have to negotiate, bluff or run away... if the party can kill everything they encounter, the temptation is there to ALWAYS attack first and ask questions later. And that's boring as hell.
Now you know. Always have a pop smoke and run spell...
My offensive spell strategy for a wiz. (summary)
Poor Reflex: Any blast um spell. (Giants...)
Poor Fort: Disintegrate and the like... (wiz killin')
Poor Will: Mind owning/wrecking spells... From dominate to feeblemind... (giants, and fighters and...)
Verses good saves and general use...
Scorching ray+ Feats Arcane Study (scorching ray, from PH2 lowers metamagic level costs by one), plus Energy Admixture Sonic, plus Empower, plus Maximize...
