Erm, in my experience/opinion, the next campaign starts the day after election day.
Or is it the day after the inauguration, in the case of presidential campaigns, etc.?
Mind, I'm talking about the US, not Britain, say, where they (try to?) limit the campaigning iirc to a few months before polls.
But then, I'm occasionally a cynic, though one mixed with an optimist in a teleportation booth. (Though I've never seen The Fly, the reference seems appropriate. And I have no idea what sort of booth the mixing occurred in in the movie, having only seen the Simpsons parody of it ... (hrm, now where did I put a certain ring...))
And I can't disagree about things looking bad for Bush; if only they looked equally bad for Gore (reference to a Tom Tomorrow cartoon...)

I hate that expression (sorry, pet peeve...)
I voted too, enjoyed it, and was proud of it... and still am...
But if the policies of the fools in charge are affecting you, and you did or didn't vote- you have a right- perhaps a duty, but certainly a right- to complain.
My opinion only.
Yes, I know it's just an expression.
(Meanwhile, I was glad to see, for once, more actual (rather than just apparent) choice on the ballot. In my area. I wish it were true in more areas...)
Ok, off of my soapbox- for the next 3 minutes, anyway... and apologies for going seriously off-topic. Erm... is this thread labeled? Ah yes, I see. "Do not remove label from mattress under penalty of"

Bad me. I forgot to label this off-topic. I was too busy worrying over finishing my oversized banner for the Keenspace Top 10.
If only they allowed Nader as a legitimate write-in in this stupid backwater hick state!
------------------

Don't sweat it- I'm just very AR at times. (I do mean the other kind of AR, though I'm a big Acid Reflux fan.) And I have some problems with Nader, though bigger problems with the "majors." (Did I vote for Nader? I think I've more or less decided not to say who I voted for, even to my own family, at least for a few days... I wonder if I've violated that rule anywhere yet... though I already announced who I'd vote for several times, nothing said I mightn't have changed my mind. Maybe. (Ducks))
I'm also trying to wrap my mind around "legitimate write-in"...
Anti-oxymoron? Sigh. Sympathy. Yes, I've heard of such things. Does to be reminded.
Doonesbury, not one of my favorite comic strips since it started losing its edge (one could argue that happened about 4 days after it started and I would chuckle, but whatever,) did a good series about Mike Doonesbury trying to get John Anderson on the ballot and having to deal with the various ways states try to keep candidates off ballots, back around 1980 was this? (I should remember, I really should.)
Well, tomorrow morning, except for those elections that'll be so close they'll be waiting on the absentee ballots (I remember when I used to send those in,) and those elections that'll be being contested, and..., it'll be all over but the quite considerable shouting. And of course it will have just begun, too. Thank goodness elections are just part of politics, and politics just part of what affects people (hrm, perhaps people can guess what one of my mumble jobs is now...)

I promised myself I wasn't going to stay up with my eyes glued to the election returns... I lied...
One useful page for following the presidential returns as they come in is this one which is tracking electoral college votes as they're reported by state. At the moment (1 am e.s.t.) only 4 states have yet to report in, and Gore and Bush are 4 votes apart. (No other candidate has won a state. Typical- it's the US all or nothing system...) Useful link until those 4 states become zero and this news is ol'hat... (not redhat- wrong discussion group- no, not slackware either... where's that internal rabbit when

If Bush wins, there will be a great wailing and gnashing of teeth. I know. Many of my fellow students have expressed anti-Bush sentiments. I live in a liberal pocket within a frighteningly conservative state. No, not to be confused with a POCKET, although sometimes I have to stop and wonder...
This election is the only reason I'm up past 2.
------------------

Gotta love the horserace.
And in the latest news, one of the 4 states (Iowa, was it?) just turned in their votes, and Gore has gone from slightly behind in Electoral Votes (by 4) to slightly ahead (by 3.) Now 3 states to go.
No, I am not going to post this each time a state drops off the undecided list- just found it amusing that I just "saw" it happen, is all. Sort of bing-bing-bing-drop.
Given that it will be decided in the morning, presumably, and that I need to be awake for my notestaking job at noon (what I do Wednesdays,) I do wonder why I'm not asleep...
Bother. Watching a race (I shouldn't call it a horserace, I adore horses) between a hypocrite (to be unwontedly kind to Gore, of whom I could and ought to (he deserves them- see Cockburn and St. Clair's "Al Gore: A User's Manual") say many worse things) and a fool (illiteracy and ignorance I can deal with, foolishness can go hang...) What's next on my agenda?...

(On second thought, Florida just went to Bush, and that gives him the 270 evs he needs- OW.)
[This message has been edited by schissel (edited 11-07-2000).]

*boot* Since it's 4 AM and I am decidedly NOT tired, and have a lot to do tomorrow, I've decided to pull an all-nighter just for the hell of it, and so I don't sleep till 2 PM again, and can go to bed early tommorow because I'll be tired, resulting in me getting up for work on time on Monday. Yay.
But back to the thread topic:
Well, personally, whatever happens in Palm Beach County -- I don't care who wins, since I hate them both.
As for elections in general: I grew up in a generally Republican area. I'd like to think I formed my opinions on my own, but I can't help thinking that where I grew up influenced my political opinions. Given that (A) most people my age (18-24 range) vote Democratic, and (B) I went to college in a VERY liberal area of New York State, I'm used to defending said views a bit more vocally than most. And if that wasn't bad enough, when I graduated in May, I took a job in, and thus moved to (da da da DUM!!!) Massachusetts, the most liberal state in the nation. (I can tolerate the political views in this area because I love my job and there are so many other things I love about the area -- Boston, long having been my favorite city, is near the top of that list.)
I won't voice my opinion on political issues here in this forum, given that over the years I have gotten SO tired of it.
Anyway, I think, based on the popular vote, Gore should win (moaning, wailing, gnashing of teeth from me). But, Bush is going to win the electorial vote (moaning, wailing, gnashing of teeth from me).
Is this fair? No. The electoral college should be abolished. All those people in Florida who voted for Gore -- because of the electoral college system, their vote didn't count. My vote (for Bush, though I don't feel the least bit warm and fuzzy about that, "the lesser of two evils" to use an already-overused term) didn't count because I live in Taxachusetts, a decidedly Gore-y state.
I think, after this election is over, you are going to see a bipartisan effort across the board to eliminate the electoral college.
In the "Hound's Home" forum I'm helping to campaign for Block of Cheese. In #crfh I briefly campaigned for Maritza. Who should I campaign for in the "Pocket" forum?
------------------

Unless you want to support Prisca.
Or if you really want to be crazy, campaign for Noelle.
------------------

Yay!
Calli / Noelle for Prez / VP in 2000! Because you KNOW, deep down inside, you WANT a webcomic artist for your country's #1 (wo)man, and a flying seal for your country's #2 ma... er... creature. <IMG SRC="http://www.keenspace.com/forums/smile.g ... cidentally, this all-nighter is paying off. I got my two most HATED chores (laundry and grocery shopping) done by 8:30 this morning. I have started to clean my apartment -- bathroom's done, bedroom and kitchen are almost done (I've discovered this baffling item in there known as a "kitchen table" on which, apparently, "food" is sometimes placed.) But I haven't started the living room yet, and that's the worst of my four rooms. I've also discovered that, in the bedroom, I have this thing which appears to be a "floor" and much of my furniture has "surfaces." Interesting. I also went to the car wash, where I discovered that it my car is , as I suspected, red, not brown. Haven't gotten to the gym yet... or to look at apartments (I want to move closer to where I work -- but my lease doesn't expire till June so I'm really looking too early I guess.)
Just trying to take the focus of this election and onto my boring life (or lack thereof.
erm... okay maybe not.
Calli / Noelle in 2000! Because I said so, dammit!
