I apologize for being the bearer of bad tidings, and hope that I misread the news. One will know in the morning, presumably.
-Eric Schissel (who still wouldn't have liked a Gore presidency either, but, yes, personally likes the thought of a Bush one even less. (There is a further comment to be made on the matter for another time.) Pardon grammatical change midsentence.)

As you may have heard, Florida seems to have changed its mind, and until they have that recount you presciently predicted, Calliope, those 25 votes are in no one's camp.
(Or in NoOne's camp? Does Odysseus now count as a Presidential contender?)
-Eric Schissel (who hears that Bush and Gore (if one must call them by their given names (sigh)) are separated in Florida by something on the order of 20,000 votes or so. My.)
[This message has been edited by schissel (edited 11-08-2000).]

*sigh* Still no news...
And yet, somehow, I'm hoping for no news. When was the last time the vote was this close? Sometime during the Guilded Age?

Rory on the Newshounds board mentioned Nixon/Kennedy in 1960. Anyone know about that? I'm too young (born in '69.)

(still, I could do some research, it's only 10:06 am here, and I don't have to be out of here for work until 10:50...)

I hope things resolve soon, Every class I've had today has ended in political combat. Personally I'm sick of seeing the solid Democrats and Republicans going at each others necks.
Your tired and frustrated friend, Averageman

Everyone around here is either Democrat or Anyone-But-Bush. (And of course there's the professor who's a self-proclaimed "Bleeding-Heart Liberal Democrat Commie Pinko.") There's already talk on my floor about whether to move to Mexico, Canada, or Australia. (I'll stay here. One, for schooling, and two, we have a Democratic governor. So nyah.) My neighbors have a death wish toward Bush. I wrote on our white board: "The idiot won. Feel free to start screaming and demanding a recount any time now."
Personally, I think that if the idiot still wins, all the English majors, English teachers, and authors should storm the Governor's mansion in Texas and prosecute Bush for murdering The English Language.
Oh, and the dead guy in Missouri won. Does anyone else think that's cool?
------------------

Bush for murdering The English Language.

Heh. I forget the exact quote.
Dubya scares me. But Gore scares me even more (hey, I'm a poet!) erm... really, retracting your concession speech? Although, he did have every reason to do so -- he shouldn't have conceded in the first place. Although (2nd although), no one could have known what was going to happen as it was happening.
Oh, and the dead guy in Missouri won. Does anyone else think that's cool?
Erm, that's decidedly NOT cool. How do Missouri people know that the man's widow is going to do the same things he would have done? And what happens if Gore wins, making Lieberman the veep, knowing Lieberman has won for Senate in Connecticut? CT has a Republican governor, who will surely appoint a Republican senator -- not what the people of CT wanted.
Although I suppose it's better than the carpetbagger they elected for Senate in my former state, or the murderer they re-elected for Senate for the seventh term in my current state. (I'm not totally without blame here, as I voted for a fourth-party candidate who got a total of 609 votes statewide -- go me...)

------------------

As to George W. Bush, his verbal mixups are here and there, and people defend them; but the "Prime Minister Poutine" incident... ewwww. Sorry, no go
(Go get 'em, Rick Mercer. I wonder if I can catch his show anywhere...)
The most contested election between the most boring candidates, a relative put it. That seems about right. Sigh.

Very cool. It just goes to show just how popular Carnahan *was* in Missouri. A friend of mine calls it a justification for his writing in LBJ for the past couple of presidential elections...
Nak
Don't blame me, I didn't vote in Florida...
