What's the significance of waving your hands in circles and the phrase "round the dough"?

The movements for turning dough into dinner rolls are similar to the "wax on, wax off" training from the movie Karate Kid. Notice the instructor is wearing a Karate Gi and black belt. Some other students and I translated some of the repetitive movements into martial arts applications.
